The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Jim, I know you're lovin the boat... They are fantastic!
we really are loving it !!
nice to have a boat that you just get in and go for a change
I have not done any real upgrades to speak of yet ...just been boating for a change instead of working on her.

1988 340 Sundancer 7.4L. The exhaust system has a short hard plastic cylinder that is before the muffler. When the engine was running heard alot of noise coming from it. What is this unit? Can I still use the boat if this part is broken?

1988 340 Sundancer. Need rollers and or sliders for teak tri-fold
cabin door. I bought the boat and did not notice cabin door was
broken. Door was strapped in place. Cant find anywhere to buy these parts.
Does anyone know the part numbers?

I made all new ones from nylon rollers I bought at Lowe's.

before the muffler there should be a rubber exhaust hose connecting it to the copper manifold. if the hose is broken you would be in trouble because you would be dumping water and exhaust into your bilge. if you can get a pic of what youre talking about.

hello , i have an 87 340. are talking about from inside the fiberglass water muffler, 12/14 inch dia, stand about 16 tall?? i just repaired this water muffler, theres nothing inside it. connecting to mine is 3 ft rubber exhaust , coming from metal elbow. i have heard of musrats getting up inside the exhaust..........but theres no parts inside water muffler or all the exhaust.

good luck.......

Before the muffler it seems from my best guess there is a check valve.
It is made of fiberglass. Is this check valve a secondary preventative measure for water reversion? if this valve is bad can you still operate boat without damage to the engine?

hello....from the engine, you have the exhaust manifolds, those go into a set of elbows,go down and turn, then into a steel tube, then the 4 rubber exhaust hose, then to the big water muffler, more rubber hose connecting to side exhaust.
i really cant think of where there would a value?? the elbows are like a inverted j-trap, so water would have to go up and back down to get into the engine. maybe yours is different than mine?? but, i doubt it.
i have a photo but i dont know how to post it here. i could email it to you..its a photo of engine showing some of exhaust.

maybe yours is diff....

Mine is an EC, so my hoses run straight from the manifold to the muffler and then out the side, no check valve in there. Unless there is something different with the Vee drive configuration which warranted a check valve they more than likely are just solid connections between hoses to create bends.

New generator problem. 6.5kW quicksilver. Ran it overnight for AC, woke up at 9am with no power, but generator was still running. All breakers were still on, and shore power works. I read how with westerbeke generators folks have to replace their capacitors when this happens, but I couldn't find any in the QS parts list for mine. Is there a capacitor somewhere, if not where should I start the process of elimination? Thanks!!
Update on my situation. Mechanic replaced the voltage regulator and control board on mine, which fixed the problem :)

Does anyone know the part number to this seal on the side window? Where can you buy this seal?
is this the window that swings open?? i replaced hard plastic strip in lower windshield frame, took a little piece and went to a sea ray dealer. they matched it up. but i know your looking for different seal , i think.
good luck.

The seal is aft of the vent window. It slides onto the window frame channel. I cant believe why its so difficult to obtain a seal.

Um, our boats are over 20years old? I would take the seal to your local dealer. That is how i have replaced all of mine.

During the regular bilge inspection last night, I found some lovely red-ish fluid under the starboard tranny.
I have never seen anything on any of the boards but does anybody know of a common issue with the v-drives on the Sundancers.
I've wiped the bottom of the drive clean and will head back down today or tomorrow with a mirror and re-examine.

MOMENTS LATER AND A BIT MORE SEARCHING.... Looks like I might have an output seal going....
Sounds like a fun winter project

My port v-drive leaks all the time :( I had to add fluid to it earlier today before going out....

Job.

Greetings Jason, - Sorry to see you are out already.

As far as the job goes - a wise man once said, "This is gonna taste a lot like a crap sandwich!"
We were thinking about doing the indoor storage again this year and this just made up our minds

This could possibly be a self inflicted wound. Twice in a row, I have now overfilled that drive (If you are wondering why - stupidity. no more no less.) - all the way up to the top of the notches when cold. I wonder if I'm not belching some up out of the fill/dipstick neck when the thing gets warm!? (The dipstick is really loose fitting but I've never had it popped out)

I have an oil absorbent mat now placed under the drive and a torn off section of oil mat wrapped around the filler neck to see if I am barfing ATF out of the neck.
We are planning on going for a run tomorrow night after work so I might have a bit more info....
