The truth about wearing a mask -finally

Advice changes as the scientist get better information. They used to think asbestos was safe. They used to think smoking was safe. Miners used to deep breath fine powdered aluminum dust deep in their lungs before going underground to protect them. For things that might matter, I still follow the current medical advice from real Doctors. I don’t care if it was different before when Grandma was a baby. And I am not so stupid to think I know better than the doctors about how to slow the spread of COVID.
I think you just proved how incompetent government is

Even the companies that make the mask say they don’t protect you from C19. This is why many don’t wear them, they don’t work!!! In fact they force you to touch your face even more than normal.

It’s nothing more than social virtue signaling.

Well guys, I'm not sure how I missed this thread...I can't read through (don't want to) 9 pages of comments....

I've pretty much concluded that I can't change any minds. It's been a great lesson in human behavior to watch recent events unfold. Whether it's this issue or the riots / protests / knocking down monuments, it's pretty much all the same... Lack of common sense, entitlement, and an arrogance that I can't say I've witnessed like this before.

I'm not sure where we go from here...

Further, I'm not sure how wearing a mask became a liberal thing....Whatever...

For those that want to listen or are looking for guidance, wearing a mask, without a valve, will help slow the spread. I'm not debating it...N95s are the best (reasonably) .....It's not liberal to want to defend and protect your neighbor. I'm as conservative as they come, and I'm telling you wearing a mask while indoors in public is advisable guidance.

No, I'm not saying put underwear around yur head and call it a mask...What are we, 9? Are we children? Do you need to be told what a mask is simply because the hostess at the restaurant where your dining has no idea how to deal with is event? Politicians are brain dead...doesn't mean you have to be.

Some of you might want to review this:

Not everyone can wear a mask safely. There are many people who cannot tolerate breathing their own exhaust.
Also if you have a beard or even stubble the mask is compromised.

Lastly, the reason wearing a mask is political is because the gubberment mandates it without an underlying law, passed by the state legislature. Instead mask ordinances are by decree. This is unconstitutional because only Congress can make law.

Bingo! I’ve been telling people this but nooooo. Gotta wear a mask!

You are still missing the fundamental point in this. The mask does not protect you. That is why in the beginning they said wearing a mask was futile. No change there. The fuc*ing mask will still not protect you.

BUT, huge but, WEARING A MASK WILL KEEP AN INFECTED PERSON FROM GIVING COVID TO SOMEONE ELSE!!!
If you read the attached pdf file in post #174 it illustrates the point by running a simple experiment that Shows masks prevent the spread of disease from exhaled breath. Actually just look at the pictures.
And Jesus, I mean Dr. Fauci, could have said that. He could have followed the lead of Asian countries and said “while we want medical grade masks for our first responders you can do your part by wearing a face covering to prevent the spread.” He did not.

And according to the CDC if I don’t spend time with people I am at low risk. What role does time play in the infectious rate.

Doctor Brix said exactly that during the briefing on tv when they announced the recommendation to wear masks. Her words were something like, “I don’t wear a mask to protect me, I wear one to protect you.”

No one has ever said that masks protect you. They protect others from an infected you. Read the attachment in post 174 for an illustration. If it’s too complicated just look at the pictures.

So unless “social virtue signaling” now means science, you are wrong.

Your last statement is wrong. And you passed a citizenship test? If you want to call yourself an American learn the difference between laws and regulations, and how both are created.

Except that was at least 4-8 weeks after the infamous "masks won't help" comment by Jesus.

"Virtue signalling" is a really cute term invented as a derogatory description of people trying to what they believe to be right, that is used by those that don't give a shit about others equally valid opinions. Its offensive, as intended.

The reason they put that warning on masks has NOTHING TO DO WITH whether they work or not. It has 100% because of the hugely litigious environment in the USA where absolutely they would get sued if anyone got COVID. A statement to say it is proof they don't work is ridiculous.

Wearing a mask won’t help you has been the message from the beginning. It has not changed.

Look there is “getting infected”, as in becoming infected from someone else. A mask won’t prevent that.

And there is “infecting others”, or giving the infection to someone else. A mask will prevent that. That is the reason for wearing a mask in public spaces around others.

Two different mechanisms. A mask does not work for one, but does work for the other.

How do you conclude that? Things changed as more was learned. Government uses the best information at its disposal at the time they make regulations. In point of fact government must request comments by those effected on any new laws or regulations. I know because I have participated in providing written and oral comments before Congressional committees on regulation that effected my industry. Just take the time to read the Federal Register.

Do things change as we learn? Of course they do. That’s the nature of the human experience. If we didn’t learn, we’d all still be living in caves waiting for lightening to bring us fire.

Make your case, but please leave personal attacks out of it. I like to think we on CSR can have spirited debate, learn from one another, and have fun. Good ideas are created in the forge of heated debate...

So, if I am in the supermarket and I see someone not wearing a mask, can I just avoid him and not get infected? Or am I doomed because I walked in the door?

And I am definitely safe today because I went by an old guy standing outside alone at the bus stop wearing his mask.

So this was the first time in human history that we have dealt with an infectious disease where wearing a mask would help prevent me from infecting you. We just learned that? Good to know.

IMO, short of a vaccine we're all gonna get it. Sooner or later.
That's really the point, isn't it? We can't stop this thing. And there is no guarantee a vaccine will be 100% effective. So what we can do is take precautions individually based on our circumstances. And hope they come up with effective treatments, not subject to political debate.
