Transmission Clatter

Hey Club SeaRay, I have a 02 380 Dancer w 8.1's that has a loud clatter in the port side tranny. the noise is definitely worse in reverse, about 50% as load in forward, and no clatter in neutral. You can feel a definite vibration through the casing. Has anyone else experienced this situation. I dont want to buy a tranny until I explore all options. Any help is appreciated!

I have had a chatter usually at idle speed in gear. Increase in throttle and it would go away. Turned out to be a slight miss in the engine that spark plugs fixed.

Have to agree with JimG - change the spark plugs and see if the chatter goes away.

+1 on what @JimG stated above. Don't panic yet - it may sound like marbles running around in the transmission but definitely check/replace the plugs first. It is somewhat common on the 8.1s. Look at the condition of the old plugs to see if there is any other sign of problems.
