I'm sure you're all familiar with the old cliche about the two happiest days of a boat owners life. The day he buys the boat and the day he sells the boat. Back on June 23rd we sold our 1987 230 Weeekender that we had enjoyed for 5 yrs. On the way from our dock to the launch ramp, where the new owner loaded the boat to take home, I experienced several emotions, none of them joy. I was glad to get her sold just because it had to be done before I could purchase the 1996 250 Sundancer I had found. Thing is, we had had so many good times and it had been such a great boat I was very apprehensive about moving on even though it was an "upgrade". So far we have REALLY enjoyed our 250 and plan to for many more years. Just wondering if any of you have had similiar experiences or just wanted to share your thoughts.

I've sold two boats in my life. Both times I was a bit sad to see them go but happy knowing that I was moving up to a larger/better boat to replace the one going away. That took the edge off the sadness.

The two happiest days........hmmmm.....My divorce and I have not gone to her wake yet so just one for me....

I had the same feeling when we sold our 87 250 DA. We owned it for 8 years and I kept it even AFTER we had bought the replacement! I just couldn't let go of it. The new owner has promised it will never see salt water and I told him he had to call me the second he was considering selling it again! The 300 DA is a great boat, but our kids remember growing up on the 250 DA and all the fun we had on that boat! It was a one in a million for reliability for it's age and the care given by it's original owner! It was a sad event when I met the owner at Vantage for the test ride and to tow it up the big hill so he could tow it from there! I still have the picture of it passing by as I took the exit to turn around and come home!

every boat i'v owned has had it's own memories--most good , and ya --some bad , but it;s still a boat, and there is no better feeling in the world--then to be out in the water, cruising to where ever the bow (pointy end) takes you.

hehehehehe....I love it!

But you wanted my wife too? Just because whe wants to live on a 390MY and keep the 320DA? She is still in NYC, knock yourself out!

I've felt mostly a little mixed about the boats I've sold. My 1993 37 SR was not so great from the day it was brand new. Still we had fun on it for 11 years. However, I was glad to be rid of it. The others were much better boats. I may never sell this one as it would make a great Lake Tahoe boat for my kids some day.

We sold our first boat the day we left Florida to drive across country and fly to Okinawa for a 4+ year tour - that was a blessing. It was a 4-year old 19' open bow that we had owned since new - we actually made money on that boat.

We sold our second boat after being a 2-boat owner for 5 months - not doing that again. We had owned that 250DA since new - 10 years. I was EXTREMELY happy to see the trailer go - what a pain. I didn't mind seeing the boat go - the cockpit features were worn, but the exterior, interior, and mechanicals were just about perfect.

This next sell is not going to be easy, if we ever decide to do it - this boat is perfect.

I've been continuously happy since the day we bought the 280, but I hated the whole buying process. I hated wrestling with what to buy, negotiating the deal, and spending money. Very happy with the results though.

I have a bass boat for sale right now, and I guarantee I'll be happy when that sells, cause then the wife will be off my ass about selling it! (I haven't used it in four years, so she rides my ass about that too.):smt101

So, maybe boat owners are just always happy. I think that saying was started by jealous people who don't own a boat.

I was never happy selling a boat.:smt089.. I would say the first ride in the spring with the family, and day the winterization is finished the boat is ready for its winter nap:smt038... For us putting the boat away means Ski season is begining...

I have always thought that saying was for the person that didn't know what they were getting into in the first place.

A quick purchase...no survay... no idea what he/she was buying.
Someone Else's problem.
Or a person that never maintains a good boat and it becomes a problem, so is happy to sell it.
I had no joy selling my old boat and miss the good times on it.
:)

Every boat I sold was because of a "need to" situation. Always regretted it. I love Old Skool and have no need or want to part with her. Yeah there is problem with boats but that's just part of the deal for me.
BTW. The admiral loves them. She bought the the one before Old Skool and Old Skool!!:smt038:smt038

If I were to sell a boat and not have the next one picked out - that would be a very, very, very sad day. Trades are happy events.

Thanks for all the comments guys. After reading through the thread I definately believe that saying is rooted in 1.jealousy 2.someone didn't know what they were getting into or 3.someone who didn't take care of what they had.

Though I love my 98 270 I bought used in 2005, I still miss my 1980 260 I bought used in 2002. I think it had the better lay out down below but I just though I better get something a little newer.

Every time I get her up on plane is my happiest day! That and just being out on the water. If I sell her it will be because her bigger sister is taking over!
