Under water light replacement

One of the SeaBlaze lights I had installed stopped working and the model I have seems to have been discontinued. It started gradually (only a few of the LEDS would light up) and now it’s completely dead. I checked the wiring and everything looks good there and the other one still works fine.

I’m thinking about having them both removed and replaced with brass drain plugs. Boatpluglight.com makes all sorts of different ones I could just screw in and reconnect with some quick connects. Has anyone ever done this? Good or bad idea?

I had the SeaBlazes installed because I was worried about messing it up. Now that the holes are already there I might attempt this myself. I’d have to fill in the 3 old screw holes and drill 3 new ones. What’s the best way to fill in the old ones? I’d also have to widen the middle wire hole to fit the drain plug. Would this be a fairly easy project or something I’m better off leaving to a professional? (If I do it at all)

Thanks.

I have replace all 3 of my seablaze lights over the last 5 years. Yup, as an electrician I can say "all LED's can fail".
It's easy to replace them. I put "lifecaulk" behind them and Fill all the screw holes in the hull and where the wires go through. When I screw them in place, remove the excess sealant. Never a leak.

I am unfamiliar with a boatplug light. I have stayed with Seablaze as I like the amount of light they give off. If you go with Boatplug, give us some feedback on the units please.

Easy DIY project! Good luck.

Thanks.

Are those the combo blue / white ones?
I have one, new in the box I had as a spare from my last boat Model is 101058 if you want to google. Looks like they're still available on Amazon as well based on a quick search

Yup, that's what I use. I don't need one for launching this year. But if you are looking to sell, I may want to have a spare. Pm me with a price.
Thanks

Have you messaged Lumitec and asked about replacement.

The ones I have are the white/blue ones. I haven’t contacted Lumitec about them and honestly want to try this drain plug idea unless someone convinces me otherwise. That way if I have one that stops working again I can just unhook the quick connects, unscrew the old one, and quickly reinstall a new one. Here’s a link to the ones I’m looking at https://boatpluglight.myshopify.com...-led-lights/products/the-quasar-2-0-oss-brass. They are 8000k lumens vs the SeaBlaze 1800k...

Yes, I'll sell as I have different lights in this boat.
To be fair, since this is TXPilot's thread, I'll give him forst shot (especially since he has one out)
If he doesn't respond here pretty quickly & you still want it's yours

Here’s a “how to” from their website on how to install a drain plug:

https://boatpluglight.myshopify.com/pages/how-to

Is this the correct way? Any other pointers? I assume I’d need stainless screws.

To fill the old screw holes from the SeaBlaze lights I assume I should use West System Six10 epoxy. Or will 5200 work for that?

Thanks a lot for the offer but if someone else wants them let them go.

If you have to replace your drain plug first, I don't like the method shown. They are not sealing the inside of the hole before installing the new plug. Their method seals sea water from getting in from outside, but water in the bilge will soak into the transom wood from the inside. IN my view, once you remove the old one, you need to check if the transom is rotted/wet around the hole. If it is, you have a bigger issue. If it is not, you need to ensure that the wood is completely dry and then seal it with epoxy all inside and around the hole so no water can soak into the raw wood core. Then you can install the new plug.
