Good morning SeaRayGang.

2011 SR 260 Sundeck here with Merc 5.0. In two different instances, Engine Guardian engaged on my boat without announcing any specific system faults. See below for more context. Long and short, engine guardian is engaging but nothing is getting annunciated on Vessel View (VV is properly connected; I'm getting telemetric data for RPM, fuel, temp etc). My apologies if this is a dupe thread, I did not find any threads addressing my issue.

Specific Questions I have:
1) Are there situations where a fault code could appear, but not display on Vessel View? (if so, wtf?)

2) Where would be the first place one would look to try and diagnose this issue?

This issue actually occurred to me twice – first time on the Maumee River, second time in the Lake Erie headed from Catawba to PIB. In both cases, the boat will run just great for about 20-30 minutes. Both occurrences, the boat needed to be running at about 3000-3500 RPM for about the 20-30 minutes for this to trigger. Once it triggers, you hear a single one-second beep and the engine revs down to idle. In both cases, I took it out of gear, assessed on the smartcraft gauge and didn’t see any warnings (like I did with the temp plug last year). I put the boat in gear again and got on plane again, and in both cases, it occurred again. On the second occurrence out in the lake, it occurred about halfway to PIB from the Catawba park ramp. We turned around and headed back at about 3000-3500 RPMs and it only triggered a second time.

Between the first and second time on the boat, I ordered and installed a Vessel View Mobile module (it’s connected to the CANbus connection behind the helm; it’s actually connected and just laying on the floor inside the access panel in the berth behind the helm). The only code that occurred did not show up the first time the Engine Guardian occurred; the second time it occurred, the SmartCraft gauge indicated a ‘SYS FAULT’, and the code 2011-23 appeared on vessel view (which is just a code indicating that there was a system fault). No further faults were recorded by Vessel View.

Not sure what your issue is but i can attest that one can receive a fault code with no vessel view alarm.

Had an issue last weekend where I hammered the throttle for a good 10 minutes to get out of a storm. After we stopped I turned the key on to listen to music while we ate. Alarm on the smart craft started blaring. Opened the engine compartment and immediately saw the gear lube oil was EMPTY!. Obviously had an air bubble that escaped. Added lube and alarm went away. NEVER had a fault show up on the vessel view.

Vessel view doesn't seem to be as good as advertised, IMHO. I love being able to create custom screens to view the data that I want to see on one screen, but kind of troubling that it didn't notify me of the low gear lube.

I only use VVM for engine data and not faults. If it happens again scroll down on you SC gauge and you should the the fault in plain english...At I can on mine.

I did, and there wasn’t anything on the smart craft gauge to indicate a fault.

Followup:

I did take the boat to the SR dealer. Their code reader picked up starboard exhaust manifold overheat, they believe sue either to impeller damage or a clog in the flow path of cooling.
They did say that their readers pick up and display things that Vessel View won’t, so my appreciation in VV is greatly diminished.

Their scanners also pick up things the Smart Craft gauges don't. I only count on VVM for telemetry. It is nice having all of the data on one screen. I bought a Lenovo tablet for the display and put it in a ram mount.

But, VVM does have its quirks. No matter how I configure it, I still get a fault for a "missing Starboard engine". Technically that is accurate, as I don't have one. But it is configured for a single engine.
