Last time I saw my heart dr. he told me about my high cholesterol, 300+. So I been eating like a dam rabbit, all kinds of veggies and salads and lots of other stuff that doesn’t taste good( Egg Beaters…Yuk). Today I went for a follow up. I stopped at the records desk and got a copy of the test to file away and compare with future ones. Guess what….my total cholesterol was 150 and everything else was within recommended parameters. I wonder who’s info he was looking at.:smt021 Maybe he used to work for MM. On my way home I stopped to have a burger and fries. Man that was good.

Glad things are better. Keep up the new routine and enjoy life.

Eat your oatmeal! I do not know how it works, but eating a small amount of the stuff four mornings a week, along with :thumbsup:your salad diet will make an impressive impact on ones cholesterol level

Congrats on lowering the c levels!

I want a f'n burger and fries too dammit! I still have 10 more lbs to go before I can partake.

Oh well, water tastes good too :smt013

Yeah..and you wonder why they ask 3 times what part they are going to operate on.... Reminds me of a few years ago I went in to see the Dr. (same one as my Dad used) He looks at the records.. asks a couple of questions then says damn... you look good for 83. :wow:

So if I'm reading this right, you were never at 300+?!?!? What did the Doc say when you pointed this out?? I would love to know your cholesterol number after the "rabbit diet" effort??

I would be so furious too!!!!

You are correct sir, I never was at 300+. I didn't pick up the old test results till after the appointment so I didn't get the chance to tell him. I'm sure that my new diet is good and plan to continue most of it but now I'm going to enjoy a nice steak or burger once in awhile. I don't plan to go wild on them. I'm really not mad about it but the guy kind of put the scare in me unnecessarily. Makes you wonder what other errors might be made by Drs/hospitals.

At least it was a "good" scare?

It did make you think about what you put into your body a bit more. Rabbit food is good for ya once in a while.

Usually 300+ is pretty serious; not only are you in "rabbit" diet terriory, which there is nothing wrong with, but meds are prescribed most of the time also. I know I wouldn't be too happy to take medication for a non-existent condition.

Yes I'm on meds and plan to question it. I had a problem with Lipator. Some aches, pains and I swear losing muscle mass/strength. I've heard other guys say the same about it. I was switched to something else and it seems to have gone away.

If you have a problem with leg cramps at night that can be caused by the anti C meds, Co Q10 will help that, I know for a fact.

150, sheesh, thats is still really hight as per my Dr.. I was at 120 with HDL at 48 and he slapped me on to statins! Wants me at 75 with HDL at 48.

NO FRIES FOR ME! Mich Ultra Light Beer, well that another story!

Everyone should know their numbers...ask for them after a blood work up, and make them explain what they mean. I'm suprised after a 300 result they didn't check it just to make certain it was for real...but then again it would mean more of your $$$

You may have some higher risk factors that are playing a role in your / his goals....I have heart disease, and my LDL is 48 with a goal of 70. Myt total is 113, but my HDL is only 36 even with proper diet and exercise.

I'm a fan of Lipitor as I don't have any side effects and my Doc tests the AST-liver enzymes every 6 months....I usually schedule my blood tests at the end of the week during boating season to give the liver 5 days to purge the Bud Select.....

Dr wants LDL as low as it can go, I exercise hence the HDL show earlier, but its the LDL ... He sites recent studies that have shown the lower the better vs heart troubles. Hey I just pay the co pay and do what the Dr orders to the best of my ability. But If I walk in to his office with total at 150 he'd be screaming. even with HDL at 50.

Without sounding too obvious here, it's all about modifying your entire lifestyle gradually. Jumping from burgers straight to rabbit food is not sustainable. Weave stuff in gradually and you will get used to it. And for the most part, you will find substitutes that you will eventually like better. Small amounts of resistance training, coupled with some cardio (walking is just fine) is the ticket. There is nothing wrong with "treating yourself" once a week to whatever your passion is- it's the daily treats that kill people.

I'm going on 51 and am on a serious weight training regimen -with cardio (albeit, I need to add more than the 20 minutes or so I'm doing). I'm 210 pounds and still wear 34/35 pants. The key is to weight train for 20 minutes or so 4-5 days a week. You are in and out of the gym (or whatever) in way less than an hour.

Where people fail to keep up with a workout program is they try to do 60,90,120 minutes at a time. With work, play, and family that's ususally not doable often enough and it falls by the wayside - which is why the failure rate is so high. Anyone can find 45 minutes in a 24 hour day to do something.

It's not about doing without, it's about balance and long term change. It's amazing how many people are able to toss all the drugs they take by taking a long term gradual balanced approach.

Again, nothing new here.....

Excellent Chris 1,

Exercise plays such a greater role than just burning adipose. Exercise is key in the development of collateral circulation. So if you suffer a heart attack the outcome is improved. Exercise stimulates HDL's to scavange lipid laden athersclerotic plaques as well. Exercise also plays a key role in the reduction of type 2 diabetes by making glucose metabolism much more efficient. It is well documented in the literature that exercise is superior to diet alone in the reduction of cardiovascular disease. Bone thinning and osteoporosis is reduced by weight training and "bone loading". There is so much more pathology that is reduced or reversed by exercise. So I agree just find 30 minutes a day and lay off the fries.

Ditto.

A short while ago there was a thread on favorite boating adult beverages. It's amazing the number of people that will drink nothing but diet soda's, but then go buy that god-aweful margarita mix to make margarita's with. That mix has the same amount of sugar, if not more than a full octane soda. I love margs. Go buy some Minute Made light and use that with some lime juice.

Also- nothing wrong with a few fries as a "treat" once in a while, buy fries every day for lunch, and all that go along with that, are the problem.

"Diet" = bad (aka doing without). Eat, and eat often - 5 to 6 times a day and don't let yourself get hungry. Getting hungry is when we ALL fall off the wagon and make bad choices.

Enough preaching from me today! :)
