I have recently brought a 1997 270 da and am wondering what is the best type anchor to buy for all around general use? Thxs Don

I believe your boat came with a Delta plow type anchor. good anchor for general use. currently what i'm buying for mine and it will sit perfectly in my anchor chute, I think yours and mine came with the same 22# model but i'm going to call my sea ray dealer and double check. I like site to store with west marine for heavy stuff. free shipping brings the cost to the same or better than any where else online that will charge you to ship a heavy rock like an anchor

Sea Ray uses a Kodiak anchor. These can only be purchased through Southcoast Marine. No website, just contact Marcia...

Ken, are you certain for this model? I know the rollers came Southcoast but thought Delta #22 was the original and it works perfect on our 97 270's.

Ditto on my 1999 - Delta came from the factory - As a matter of fact, when we raft up most boats I go with ask me to set the anchor because I never drag (yet :smt001).

No I am not certain. I do know that Sea Ray uses Kodiaks but I do not know when theybstarted using them and on what models. I tried a Delta on my boat and it didn't fit for squat. If the Delta works on yours, it probably is the right anchor for the boat in question. Maybe this will help someone with a different model? I had a hell of a time until I learned about Kodiak (of course on CSR!)

You may get some interesting info from this site, http://www.rocna.com/?gclid=CNXV6tWD8boCFfA7MgodFgoAWw

They have a video that shows how fast these anchors reset themselves. As far as chain goes, I think a good minimum would be 30 - 40 feet of 5/16. Total rode length would depend on the deepest water that you plan on anchoring in. I think they recommend something like a minimum of 10 times the deepest anchorage you expect to park in for an overnight stay. We still have our "Delta" plow type anchor because we bought it before we found out about the "Rocna" anchors. We haven't had any issues with this anchor so we have no need to replace it at this time. We do keep a "Danforth" on board as well, but rarely use it. For rode we have 30' of galvanized proof coil 5/16 chain and 250' of 1/2" braided nylon line. I know everyone is going to say this is way overkill for a 24' boat, but we do sleep well at night and have never had a dragging problem. Note; we tend to avoid crowded anchorages so we can always use at least a 7 to 1 scope, and we usually anchor in 30' or less. Good luck. When dealing with overnight anchoring I think more is always better, to a point. They say if you go too big with the line size you loose some of the elasticity that guards against shock load.

Being new to this, i am very impressed with the responses i have gotten. Thank you all, and i will share any info i have or learn in the furture. Thanks Again Don

Thanks Mike, i checked out the thread and it is very informative. I guess my biggest problem is i do not have a Windlass. From what i can tell it seems to be a must to have one installed. Thanks alot Don

It is not a cheap upgrade, but is well worth it if you use your anchor. The biggest surprise was the cost of wire from the battery to the windlass. You will use 50 feet of battery cable to run it, over $250 as I recall.
