My boat has a 11' 2" beam, i'm in a slip with 12' 7" distance between poles....getting in, and out, is OK now,....My new home builder is putting in poles with a 12' distance, thats 7" shorter than i have now...to put in poles with a 13' distance, the added money to the home is $7.500.00
Should i take the chance and stay with the 12' poles or go for the 13 footers
The poles are not in yet, this is a Condo community thats being built and in the building stage now, but if at the end i change my mind and want the 13's i'll pay more to move them..

Should i go ahead and get 13's, for the 75 hundred?? or chance i'll be able to dock with the 12's

Remember the wind, and currents, This is a long from the bay and this condo is at the very end of a 15 minute ride through a tight channel with boats on both sides, i'll have a bulk head on my starboard side and 1 boat port side when docked in stern ways........

Am i sure that 12' width between poles, with a 11.2 beam
is risky to chance?

That doesn't give you much room to install any kind of a bumper or wheel to assist your entry or exit either.

Right..i'm not having any problem now with the 12' 7" so 13" would be very helpful....

but with 12' ?? :smt009

You will pay $7,500 over and over again for gel coat repair after every storm and boat wake. Tack it onto the mortgage.

Negotiate a lower amount. Why does it cost more to put them farther apart? This does not cost the builder a dime!

The builder/owner, pointed out that i was purchasing an extra foot of bulk head space...firm price....$7500

I guess i will.......:smt089

12' is not enough....they should cave in a bit since it is not a reasonable width for a custom boat dock.

No way out. If they give you an extra foot, the they should give everyone an extra foot. I see the value of an extra foot of bulkhead space. $7,500 over 30 years is nothing. You will have it as a resale selling point. Your dock neighbors will have beam envy. Your dock neighbors will have gel coat envy.

Hi Bill, If I got this right, your building a new home and you are also building a dock at it for your 310. If you can only go 13', then go the 13'. If you can go bigger, go bigger. This is your first year with a boat, right? I'll bet 3 years from now you're looking at , oh say, a nice 40 with diesels?...beam-
13-6"

The way it was explained to me was that there will be different spaces, some smaller for the smaller boats and the 12' distance poles according to the builder /owner for mid size boats,
The area chosen for the larger boats poles will range from boats with 11.2 Beams to 14" beams,
Remember, this is not a Marina, i'ts a condo community that supplys a slip for your boat...

Hi, My 3 sons, thanks for chiming in,

Im buying into a condo being built with a slip included, that is NOT deeded to me, but is part of the condo community, i'ts a slip for me only, and i can if i want rent it out to another condo owner if need be in the future.......who knows what the future holds...

I' m only going 13' because i have to....i can go as big as i want but at $7500 a foot thats pretty steep even for a rich guy like me....:wow:
This is my first, and last boat, we love her now, and always will, she's with us till death......:thumbsup::thumbsup:

How long are the piers? Can you envision yourself with a larger boat?

Personally I'd ask him if you could get 16' for 15k.

You mean how high?? dunno, maybe 16 feet or what ever they usually are...

Larger boat. ?? NO, this boat is large enough for my wife and I.....

16' for 15k. ? i would ask if i had a bigger boat, but they won't budge...:smt009

Bill,
Even more important is when you decide (and we all do) to trade up, you will now have a house on the water with a slip your new boat wont fit in. For both resale (house on water people want the slip) and peace of mind if you ever want to move up, I would consider adding 15k and making it 14'. Just a thought....

I was thinking the same thing....it's easy to spend other people's money.
