When is it too hot to go boating?

We will be out today with temps expected to reach 99 degrees and the dewpoint right now at 73 degrees. Water temp hit 95 degrees on Lake Norman yesterday. No choice but to drink a lot beer.

Wow.......95 degrees at Lake Norman too. You know maybe it is the Nuclear Reactors on both our lakes. :smt043

90 degree water temperature is hard to believe. How does that happen? What must be growing 90 degree water?

EVERYTHING...

Thursday I did the monthly "clean the bottom" ritual.
Water temp in the canal, under the hull was 91 degrees, but as mentioned above- the stagnant surface layer was so hot, it was downright uncomfortable while I was scrubbing the waterline. Easily over 100 degrees, from the hot sun baking on it.

I just came back from the boat. The temp up here right now is 81 degrees 83% humidity. It is going to be 91 with 98% humidity. Sorry but that is too hot to be on the boat up here. We would be spending our time in the cabin. Staying home this weekend with the A/C on.

Connie, I see that you're just up the road from me. :smt001
I'll be on the boat in 2hrs have afew cocktails and going swimming. .
Feels Like:81 °F
Barometer:29.9 in and steady
Humidity:89 %

Where are you at on the lake ??. I'm at South bay near Rt 31. .:smt001

You knew you'd get a reaction from me on that comment! hahaha

Actually Catawba has cooling towers so there is much less temperature transferance to the Lake Wylie. Now McGuire on LKN...we don't have cooling towers, and I think we do add to the temperature. Specially if we intake water from the low water suction. It's not normal to do that, because of the negative feedback to the lake.

At any rate, I feel your pain, I have been on the lake this weekend and yea, water is not, not refreshing. Driving through a blast furnace to get to the anchoring spot to jump into hot water... ah heck, I'll take it! If I get the call, my boat is still hooked up in the drive way right now! See ya'll out there!

Had same issue the other day. Wife and I went to boat to just clean and sit on deck. It was so hot and no breeze we both went below with AC on for an hour then went home. Too darn hot!

Mike.........Does Duke also operate the Steam Plant on Wylie? I know the cove where they dump the hot water was over 100 degrees earlier this year.:smt101

Dave:

I have to agree with you on this one. I have been on or around Lake Wylie since 1993 and I can't remember being as hot as I was washing the boat (in the shade) yesterday before the Aquapalooza. My clothes were drenched with sweat.

If we did not have the generator and AC for the kids to get out of the heat every so often we would not have made it through the event Saturday.

By the way thanks so much on the IAC....that was it!

If it's too hot to go boating, you're boating in the wrong area. We left Atlantic City this morning and it was hot, probably already in the mid-nineties. About a half hour later, we were a few miles off-shore on the Atlantic. The water temps fell into the 74 degree range and the air temperature was likewise in the 70s. Nice and comfy all the way up to Barnegat Inlet. Unfortunately, sooner or later we had to go inside on the bay and the 100 degree air temperatures were back.

So if it's too hot to boat, its because your boat is in the wrong place. Float it somewhere else.

Best regards,
Frank

We have bath water now as well. We go out in the evening right before sunset. Cruise to watch the sun go down, head back to the marina to grill, (where we all have large fans running) then we will head back out around 11 to float and watch the stars.

I just returned from the Flathead Valley in Mont. The temp here when I left Okla was 103 with a heat index of 128... I checked the airport in Kalispell and it was a temp of 84, 18% humidty.. for a heat index of 81... Needless to say I had a hard time getting back on the plane.

In my area it is flooded and right above my marina they have had the area closed to recreational traffic and downstream has been idle speed on and off. Every time we think it is dropping they get more rain up north and the river rises back up. The problem is with Heat Indexes in the 110's and while the water is rising we have debris in the water. We have been boating every other weekend. The current is so strong that all we can do is hold on to a rope and it isn't too enjoyable. So this season isn't going to be the best. Hopefully by fall the water will be nice. I am fortunate that my marina is a high point, so I have been able to get to our boat all season. But after awhile when you can't get in the water and the generator sea strainer keeps clogging with little sticks. It get's to be not too hot for boating.

Sorry to hear how your boating is being affected by all the water but I gotta tell you that my lawn really looks good this year.
