Where are we going?

Well actually I don't think it's a bad idea. Lord knows the majority of people I see coming in have no idea what an employer is looking for in an applicant. A little real world experience might give part of them a clue. I really wish that there would be a mandatory class on finances, economics, check book keeping, something to give kids an idea of what they face and need to get along.

How about a class that teaches them to show up on time, pull their pants up, turn their hat around and WORK! Just my pet peeves working in the construction industry.

I may have to agree here. Hell, its a better use of time than half the crap that public school systems push on kids now.

Who would you rather have working for you? Jimmy, who has been through the program, or Johnny who spent the majority of his senior year in the gym as a teachers aid playing dodge ball.

I started working in retail when I was in high school way back when. Gave me skills in dealing with buyers that I still use today dealing with my clients. I say its a good idea!!

I have to agree this may be a good thing. I mowed lawns, shoveled snow, pumped gas, and swept floors in various jobs through my high school years. While there might have been better choices as long term career goals, these jobs did teach me to work with others, show up on time and to be responsible.

Nice - one more reason to dislike Walmart....

It is funny how everyone seems to "hate" Walmart but they are the largest retailer. Everyone hates Chinese crap, I wonder which union people shop at Walmart and buy that stuff because it is cheap. Guys: Walmart and the decline of US manufacturing is only because US citizens vote with their dollars.:smt021

+100, I have spent my career working to make it cheaper to ship stuff by water, so believe me when I say, we (as in all of us) are own worst enemy when it comes to jobs creation. I also hate to say that my father was right about 'buying American'. Not sure what gets me the most, that the old guy was right, or that I now sound like him.

When did it change? I mean when I grew up ( 1960”s ) my Mother and Father guided my through common sense and dealing w/ money. I had a check book at 17 and I did not dare to stroll out of the house w/ my pants dragging. My Father knew I could handle my first job and "I" knew if there was idle time that the broom handle fit perfectly in my hands. I had respect for others. You just did not use profanity towards a coach or teacher. At some point society now expects teachers to take over the parenting. I know we are in a two income society but, have noticed in a lot of cases only one income earner comes to school functions weather scholastic or extracurricular. Sure I'm old fashion but, it seems home work, chores and good expectations go further than electronic games.

Mowed lawns in 4th - 6th grades - bought a NEW sailboat (Sunfish) at age 10.
Mowed lawns and shoveled snow in 7th - 10th. Bought a NEW motorcycle at age 12.
Washed dishes and cooked in 11th, and 12th. Bought a NEW Honda Accord at age 16.
Earned my own Private Pilots license ages 16 - 17 (washed a lot of dishes).
Work ethic is the strongest gift a parent can give to a child.
