1999 454 Mag MPI just quits - videos

About 20 posts ago, I asked a question that by and large descended into a discussions about the metal composition of the gears. All I needed was to realize that the tang was engaging BEFORE I got the gear all the way in, so instead of having the slot pointing to #1, it needed to be 30ish degrees CCW. Dropped right in. 3 days for 5 seconds of STEM thinking.
I have first and second start videos. No tapping, no bad noises, sucking air in start 1 because the plenum wasn't bolted down, and no water in start 2 because I forgot to open the sea cock. I'll set the timing when it cools down, and then it's off to the races (at break in speeds). What should I give it? 10 hours?

So happy you got this, I was worried sick

Here's a little tip for all you newbies, and us oldsters that have been doing this for 50+years:
In goes to in, Out goes to out. Quit assuming, especially if you mount the pump upside down from the other one.......
Yes, I found them all. Oh yeah, that was a brand new impeller.

I have lost faith in the Distributor. It was corroded around the magnets from sitting in the garage for a couple of years, which I think I cleaned up ok, but the engine is still missing, and having trouble with getting idle timing set. There's not really guidance or a spec for putting that back together, and the spring clip might be impeding with advance. I'm not experienced enough to know for sure. No time to mess around now. I have ordered a new Distributor and ignition module. Should be here tomorrow. May be breaking it in by the weekend...... we'll see.

Nope. distributor cured the roughness and misfire. Still shit for idle, and will stall. I'm seeing the rpms move around, so, now we're back to fuel. One thing I didn't do, and will never ever do again, is skip disassembling the cool fuel, and at least clean the filters to the hp pump and the regulator. So, now I get to crawl under the engine, and remove the cool fuel to put it on the bench. That's on me.
MEANWHILE, the Stbd engine, which was starting, running and doing what it should all along, suddenly decided to crank with no start. Fuel pressure is coming up, so I checked the ignition with a dummy light (inliine spark light). Had spark at the ignition coil, but not the plug wire. OK, troubleshooting leads to an open pickup coil. Well I just went through that on the Port, so rather than try to take it apart, I just ordered another kit. Time to replace a 22 year old distributor anyways (even with 300 hour on it). Put that in this morning, and still no start. hmmm, now we're moving towards expensive stuff. Pull a couple of plugs, and they are wet, so assuming the injectors are doing their thing. I was going to replace the plugs anyways, so I change out the easy 4 (2,4,6,8). Still crank no start. Not even a cough. Still smells like ignition, but ? New cap, new rotor, new distributor, new distributor module, new ignition coil. checked grounds for the ECM to make sure I didn't break anything off messing with the engine. Have the distro set to exactly where it was when I took the old one out. All seem good. Check the connections to the ECM. They are clean and dry. I do have a spare ECM to test with, but DAMN!
No codes thrown, all values seem normal. 9.7 on time for the injectors during the start sequence.
My gun is out and cocked. Talk me down before I start firing in the bottom of the bilge.

Is you balancer still good as in harmonic

Need to reset timing, and make sure it didn’t jump a tooth.
Too hot now. Buddy left keys early. Water near 100 degrees. Lobster all went to deeper water. Gun back in the holster for now.

Ok, Port engine sorted. I had the spares, so I replaced the high pressure pump and regulator on the cool fuel 2. Re-installed, and that one is rock solid idle now, and burning what it should be burning.
Starboard, refused to start last week after running all good. Found an open pickup coil on the distro, so I just replaced the whole distro. Found the engine to be flooded, from trying to start it nicely a bunch of times. Cleared the flooding, and the engine started, but runs like shit. Missing all over the place. This morning, I pulled the brand new plugs I put in, that have oh, 5 minutes on them. What does this tell you? My first thought is Nothing on the odd side is firing. So, new distributor timing module bad? I have a bunch I can check with. Had swapped out the ECM last week, and ran the same.
I'll be doing a compression check later when the sun goes away for a bit.

rich and none seem to be the fuel distribution.
