500/520 DB official thread

Yea, that's going to make it much more difficult to lay up / fabricate.
About the only thing is to pay someone to use theirs to make a mold then lay up a new one from the mold.

Or pay someone to scan the other side then mirror it and print a mold then lay up another new one.

Ca Ching....
My boat is out of the water and accessible in Falmouth MA till April if you could find someone near Falmouth to take measurements and make a mold for you you are welcome to use my boat. I am not sure if they could do it installed or not. The few boat yards near me that I think could manage to do it are Falmouth Marine (talk to Paul) or Macdougalls Cape Cod Marine Service but I don't have a contact for them.

Thank you for the offer! I'm in the PNW, and am talking to some shops about fabricating one.

The best is to recirculate the BB to the bucket and do that for a couple of hours each circuit. But, first blow down the circuit with the water hose and clean out the mud and debris.
I have nylon hose fittings installed for each AC unit; one at the raw water pump and one at the AC unit discharge. There is several feet of discharge hose I simply can't get to as it is behind just about every installed cabinet in the boat.
The below pics may help you -

Any chance you can repost the photos from your BB setup? or email them to me?

What I have found is the Nylon fittings tend to swell up over time and are difficult to take apart and put together. I would use CPVC hose couplings now.

Parts on hand... Wondered what everyone thinks or keeps on hand while taking longer trips.

Filters, impellors and fluids of course but any major parts e.g., starters, water pumps, alternators, etc.?

If you are in that deep then maybe consider relocation of the port engine's fuel cooler. It's in a miserable location down under the raw water pump. Can't get to the zinc's, hose clamps, or even get it out to descale. So, when I replaced my RW pumps I moved it to the other side of the engine.
For me, this month is pulling, cleaning, and new soft-goods on all of the engines' coolers; we are at that time in the maintenance cycle. While all that is apart the exhaust manifolds get pulled, re-surfaced, new gaskets and bolts.

Tom - what made you replace your raw water pumps? Do you mean rebuild(?), new impellors(?) or complete pump replacement? My port engine has the OEM (2007) but my starboard has a newer one replaced in 2013. Have been kicking around purchasing one for when one fails. Wasn't sure if that is a typical failure point.

Oh man that goes back - I had a "mechanic" replace the impellers (I bought the impellers BTW). They were the wrong spline count and the mechanic proceeded to try and beat the impellers into the housing and in the process put hammer dings into the housing cover seal area. The engine could not maintain operating temperatures and after a month of testing I found the dings and that they were leaking air rendering the pump useless. That pump was replaced. The new pumps have a spline count different from the OEM ones so I carry two different impellers.....

It's a great idea to have a spare but they are hugely reliable. Plus the new Sherwood pumps cannot use the impellers you probably have on the boat.

Ah found it - here you go -

Damn, that’s a hard story. Yes we also have one of each Impellor spline count on the boat.

Bittersweet moment - we’ve put our 520 up for sale. She’s a great boat, but our kids don’t come out anymore and our boating lifestyle has changed.

I appreciate all the great advice from this group over the years!

Boat looks great. I thought I had done as much or more upgrades than anyone with these boats... You have outdone me with a number of things for sure...

She is turn key for sure. Good luck with the sale.

Yeah I spent a lot of time upgrading and tweaking to get her just so. We go on long trips -- last summer we were out for 2 months.

My wife and I are snow birding while the kids are off at college. We fly home to meet them over the holidays but have been living on the boat since last October. Heading home at the end of the month but we will take our time and make the 650 miles over 30 days or so. Already reserved our space for next November to come back down south.

Plan to go further south and then to the Bahamas late January after the kids go back to school (winter break) again.

We love it. Need to follow a few of your upgrades, Water Maker and more battery storage are on the list. Probably follow @ttmott with a partial hard pipe for the waste hose replacements.

Also like the wind sensor, did you tie that directly into the 8616 or do you have a separate display?

I replaced the waste hoses several years ago, and then 1 year ago replaced the toilets with macerators.

The wind sensor is connected wirelessly to the 8616, and shows up on the separate display as well.

We are working our way to Alaska. With a new (to us) boat, we won't go all the way this summer, but maybe next.

Which material is recommended to repack our rudder seals? Traditional wax or Gore? Also, what thickness works best? Thanks!

Fluid weeping from my holding tank vent (according to manual) inside heated storage with empty holding tank...It does not stink. Discoloring my gel and the pic was taken 2 weeks ago so it cannot be rain or anything. Any thoughts? My marina is flummoxed...Ideas?
