It never occurred to me to check the prop sizes before running since i got the boat. (2 months).

Situation:

WELL... on Sunday, My props and I found the bottom of the river. (in case anyone was missing it, its still there) I damaged the port pop pretty good, and it spun the hub. I limped home on the starb engine.

I pulled the prop and I noticed my spare prop was a 15, and the installed prop was a 17. I pulled the starb prop to get a third opinion. It was a 15. SO i had been running a 17 and a 15 prop at the same time.

West Marine said the correct prop for my boat and engine would be the 15's.

Questions:

I thought all along the boat was hard to plane (needed more speed) than it should. Would the difference in props account for this?

The boat seemed to be lower in the water on plane port side (with the 17 prop) I thought it was a weight issue and used the bow planes to compensate. Would the difference in props cause this?

Would the difference effect fuel usage?

After re-installing spare props, the starb engine's prop, which we used to limp home, while OFF and in reverse spins freely in one direction, and with little resistance (it kinda clicks) in the opposite direction. In Forward, it is the opposite, but does not spin at all in one direction. The port engine in reverse does not spin in one direction and spins freely in the other, and vice versa in Forward.

Is there a problem there?

The prop shop is re-pitching and repairing the 17 prop to 15 so I can have anon board spare. And I was lucky enough to drop the crown nut in the river while swapping props... sigh.

Thanks,

James

note to self.....always carry a spare prop nut (or two) and spare garboard drain plug (or two).....

I guess you have Alpha legs? The clicking in opposite direction of selection is normal, I've attached an image of a gear in the gearbox. You can see the ramps and slots that the dog clutch rides on (inner part of gear). In one direction the clutch grabs, in the other it rides up and out.
The prop shaft shouldn't click in neutral (clutch partially engaged).
Having matched props should help, one engine would have been working harder than the other if you were trying to match rpms.
Hope this helps.
