We were out on Saturday and the bugs were the worst we've ever had. There must have been thousands of them, literally.
I had some household bug spray that I used, but it didn't last long.
What do you guys use that is effective, and won't harm gelcoat or Sumbrella?

I know it works for mosquitoes, but not sure about other bugs. I would try a "Therma Cell" unit and see if it works. I first used one when they came out around 2005-06 going to Maine and bear hunting in late August. They work. At that time they only made a small personal version. Now they make bigger ones that might be perfect for a boat.

Go to Amazon and type it in.

I have a thermacell also and they do help a lot. Refills can be pricey. The other thing I did was to make bug screens that will zip in place of my canvas so that you still get a breeze and a nice view, but keeps the bugs outside. The screens are also a great inbetween when it's a little chilly but you don't want the clears up. They block a lot of wind.

+1 on Thermacell

It works!

Also have a thermocell but they only work in still conditions. You may laugh but try Johnson's Baby Cream Oil cocoa & Shea butter. I can confirm it works for mosquitoes and midges in our area. Just rub it on and voila....as long as you don't mind smelling like a pina colada!

I have a thermacell that we take camping, so I'll take that next time. I didn't even think of that, and it was mostly calm.
I just had a camper back made for the boat and I had screens put in, bit the front is all Inslaglass, and it would have been too hot with that up.

+2 on the Thermocell.

We ended up with a couple of these. The Backpacker. They last longer (if you forget to turn them off after some cocktails ;)), and all you need to purchase are the strips. The larger can of butane is less than the Thermocell refills.

My wife got me to try Avon skin so soft on a Jeep trip through the Rubicon years ago and the mosquitoes there thought it was Bbq sauce and attacked

My friend is dealing with the mayflies on the Mississippi this week. Not at that magnitude, but still a mess.

FYI - During the hatch, don’t go to a Weezer concert and leave your blue led lights on so you can find your way back to the dock you rented at the casino at 2am. Ask me how I know this. :(
