Working on upgrading my SC5000 to Vessel View, 06 340. Which unit are most upgrading to, the 703 or 903 (will the 903 fit where the SC5000 currently is ) ?

Looking at the specs it looks like it may, but is certainly a tight fit. Anyone done this?

Thanks, Korkie

I looked at doing it to our 280 and decided it wouldn't fit. But the SC5000 had never been intended for the 280 dash and it was shoehorned into the space. As I recall it would have required a NMEA2K network as well and at the time I viewed it as a snowball turning into an avalanche. I do know now that N2K nets are ridiculously easy so may be that was a bad call on my part.

You might want to consider adding another Garmin MFD. The newer Vessel Views have uncoupled the Smartcraft data converter/NMEA 2000 (VesseView Link) from the display so you could plug that output into anything. I have grown to love the Garmin engine data screens to the extent that I rarely even look at my VV4. OTOH, there may be engine functions that can only be controlled from a VV, which is not the case with my diesels.

This is an older install I did on my 340da when I had it so the components are a bit different now but this was sc5000 to VV7. You might be able to compare specs to get an idea as to what might fit.

Any faults sent by the engines do not appear on the NMEA network; only the J1939 data pair (CAN 2) of the Smartcraft network. So I believe you still need a VV or SC display.

Thanks Jeremy - I had looked at your pics that I saved when you sold your boat. I kept them as I like several of the upgrades you did and use them for a reference. Looks like the VV703 is the one I will need to get. The 9 is just going to be too big.

Alnav i am getting ready to upgrade our new to us 44db's electronics. My electronic knowledge is limited. Would you still go with the Garmin or change if you could do over.
I am replacing radar, plotter, Smartcraft. would like to have 2 MFD's and a replacement for the Smartcraft. What would you recommend.

RBB, I'm perfectly happy with the gear I have. I love the Garmin's engine displays and especially the ability to do fuel management. I have the VV4 and that size was perfect for me as I was able to use the extra space for a Maretron DSM display, which I also highly recommend. Unless one is going to use the VesselView as a spare chartplotter (which only makes sense if other equipment is part of the Simrad family), I don't think the space used by the larger VesselViews is worth it if space is at a premium.
In addition to starting a system block diagram of your new system, I would also work on the layout of your helm. It may take longer to get new dash panels made than to get the actual equipment. Full size templates for each piece of equipment can be gotten at the vendor's website that will enable playing with the layout. Tecnografic is probably the OEM for your dash panels and will also do a final layout in advance of ordering new panels.
