First Boat

Congratulation on your purchase and welcome aboard. We need pics.

Does your boat really have a 360HP motor?

Congratulations on the first (of many) boats. You can learn a lot from here

Very nice! A friend of mine had a 28' flybridge essentially the same and had it for over 30yrs. Long since retired, he decided to sell her a couple of years ago, but it's still in the area - green canvas.

Hope it's a great boat for you!

CR Sea Ray,
Looking at the tall pines in the background of your photo I'd say you are much further downriver from us. Don't know where you are because you didn't fill out your profile so please do so.

That is just about the perfect boat for the Columbia. If you point that beauty upstream you are in for a truly great trip. Four locks on the Columbia and you'll be right in our area.

I've made the trip from the Tri-Cities to Portland several times and once out to the ocean. I can offer you all kinds of answers and advice about the river and, if you like, I can send you an Excel file that has the mileages between ports on the river. I put it together years ago for my own use and have shared it with many others. If you want it just PM me with your email address.

Bon voyage, and welcome to CSR.

Mike

No offense, but my BS detector is going off. Putting a 7k+ motor into a nearly 50 year old $4k boat doesn't pass my smell test. Also, I'm being generous with my numbers.

No offense?
“Just because you say that doesn't mean you get to say whatever you want to say to me!” Ricky: “It sure as hell does!” Ricky: “It's in the Geneva Conventions, look it up!”
I just bought the boat. We're not talking Biden bucks here. This motor came with paperwork was installed new in 2002 at a cost of $2500 Whether or not you believe it makes no difference to me and I'm being the generous one here.
Nice signature. A boat needs no justification ... just water

I think that BS meter needs a calibration. Here in the PNW (Pacific North West), there is folks putting built motors in all kinds of things. Look at Chris from the Youtube channel B is for Build. He put two LSX motors that were over built in a 30 plus year old Italian Express Cruiser. But he also puts high end motors in all kinds of things.

With long wet winters, guys do what they can to pass time. There is all kinds of things that goes on that folks in other states might find not right.

I appreciate being welcomed. I'm here to be a part of a respectable community. He asked about the motor, and I told him. I don't appreciate being called a liar no matter how polite it is. He could've kept his thoughts about it to himself but decided to tell people his BS meter was going off. I was generous about it and consider the matter resolved.
Thank you Hornsby!
How about them 49er's?

Calm down pal, I did not call you a liar. Yes, I should have been more diligent in expressing my thoughts. The whole concept of putting that motor (which i assumed was much newer) in an old boat didn't make sense to me. Thanks to JHornsby for providing insight.

New guy questions.
Is the small reservoir meant for the cabin heater? Is it independent from the motor? I was told that it has a separate fuel pump meant to get me back to the dock in case the regular one goes out. I think that's it mounted above the fuel filter. Does anyone have experience running on it alone?
Thanks.

Without being there to actually put eyes on it, it looks like the coolant tank for the heat exchanger. It should be for coolant to circulate through the motor while cooler sea water cools the coolant. It's basically and liquid to liquid radiator. Your heating system may or may not be a part of that.

As for there being two fuel pumps, I personally would drop one from the system. I doubt there is a recirculating line from the carb to the tank. With a carb for a marine application, a failure should dump the fuel into the carb and not into the bilge where it could explode.
