Gimbal Pin removal

Mornin'. I'm new to the site, so constructive criticism will be appreciated.
I am removing my gimbal ring due to a broken part. I've taken all off down to the lower pin (the hardened one with the cotter pin) which refuses to be "persuaded" out. I have even gone so far as to cut away all of the gimbal ring down to that pin, and it still won't budge. No amount of "rust buster" or other corrosion breaker has helped. I'm afraid of pounding too hard for fear of breaking the ears that hold the pin. (And breaking that (I'm told) will require engine removal... hope not to have to do that) Any ideas?
Thanks Doug

I'm guessing you are doing an Alpha, MR, or I-MR style drive. Further guessing that you are trying to replace the gimbal ring and already have the gimbal housing out of the way.

I think, but never had to do it myself, that the lower pin screws into place. I could be wrong about that. Still, you should be to use the old reliable "heat wrench" on that. The aluminum will expand faster than the steel. You should be then able to break the corrosion free with an impact wrench having a flat blade fitting rather than a socket.

Best regards,

You are correct on all counts. In reading the forum, I assumed that the pin (I think some call it a bearing) would pound out. I know there's a cotter pin that holds it in, but not sure about the screw thing. I'll check it out tomorrow.

I'm not sure of the screw thing either. The parts list I have shows a smooth part with no threads drawn. But the service manual shows a screwdriver slot to turn the pin. The slot could be to screw it in or to align the cotter pin hole. Either case, I'd still it it with a little heat. You might need more than just a propane torch, since aluminum conducts heat very well. When I couldn't get... I forget, it was about 15 years ago... maybe the hinge pins, out of my Alpha, we had to use acetylene to get the damned thing to loosen. Propane didn't get the metal hot.
