Is there a legal way for an American to get a temporary gun license in Canada while travelling?
 
Here you go. I thought the answer would be no but they certainly have a path for hunting and a far more restrictive path for handguns.

Now the interesting part is if you are a indigenous member of Canada you can own and carry what you want. I suppose that means you can claim to be hunting squirrels if you are indigenous when you visit Toronto or Montreal.

It is hard to make up nutty stuff like this.
 
you can bring a hunting rifle in during season. but under no circumstances, can you bring in a handgun. and no, an AR15 is not considered a hunting rifle. Bolt action Remington 700 or there abouts is fine.

Well sorry but you are making this part of the nutty stuff up. indigenous Canadians are not exempt from Canadian gun laws. They do have treaty protected hunting rights in some areas but that tends to be the far north.

That said, our Liberal government are making nutty gun laws with respect to banning assault “style” weapons. Based on how they look, not what they are. Nutty and yea, not making it up.
 
You absolutely can take handguns in Canada. They have to be of a certain type, and barrel length, and the process is lengthy.
We'll be driving through Canada to Alaska next summer, so I've read up on it a little bit.
I've decided to just leave my firearms at home though, it's not worth the hassle.

Can I introduce you to Illinois? Complete cluster down here. Passed an “assault“ weapons ban in the middle of the night with no hearings and debate by stripping an insurance bill and putting the ban in its place. Current owners had until Jan 1 to register their guns. They didn’t and are now criminals. Fat a$$ governor gave supreme court candidates millions for their campaigns. So we have had zero support in court. US Supreme Court has denied review on multiple occasions. Justice delayed is justice denied. We are completely screwed.
