Help Needed, I am installing new engine in my old S/R and trying to remove the outdrive. I already pulled the other engine out. I am removing the outdrive so as to align the engine/driveshaft properly. I have removed the trim cylinders and all six of the locking nuts and the exhaust boot clamp. the unit slide back about a 1/4 inch but, won't come back any further. I searched my old Service manual but found nothing. I can see a clamp over a rubber hose at the transom inside the pivot collar but not sure what to remove. This is where I stopped not sure what to do next.
I thank you for your help in advance,
Michael :smt024:huh:

techmitch,
The O/D is a first generation I beleive, painted black in color. seems to be the original unit. I looked for a serial number but didnit find one under the mercruiser sticker on either side.
Thanks Michael
And yes, I have the drive in forward gear since I pulled the engine out already.

No, the lower shift cable must be in fwd, the brass shoes in a straight line for the drive to be removed.

I just pulled mine. Is a 1978 in year. According to the book the splines can get stuck in the coupler behind the engine. But then again you said you pulled the engine.
are you sure you actually shifted it to toward. You may have disconnected the cable and not actually done it. Mine was stubborn but came out. Also I did get the engine out first. Check the bearing still in the gamble. That may still be holding you up too by not letting the shaft slide thru.
