Keowee for Labor Day

Gerald,

Does this look right?

Gerald, you are the man!! Nice write up on the directions.

Chuck, from Gerald's directions, looks like you found it. Thanks. We may jet up there before we head down to the marina to meet you guys. If we get there at 9am, I think we may have enough time to check the falls out before we head south to meet up with the crew. Gerald, do you think it could be done? Sounds like it may only take 30min +/- at 30-35 mph to make it to the south end of the lake from Mile Creek? And if needed, we can always go faster...LOL

You are welcome. I tried to pinpoint some waypoints and ramps on the lake so I could load them into my GPS. If you have a Garmin GPS I can email you the file. I use Mapsource to layout all my trips. One of the nice features is to few them in Google Earth.

Yep Chuck you nailed it. The reason I spent so much effort to describe it is that so many coves on Keowee look like the other gazillion ones. When all else fails the "park in that area of the lake and watch where all the other boats go" will always work.

Brian you should have plenty of time.

Looks like we will check out the falls first.

Google is just awsome when it comes to someting like this. We have been all over the lake already and yet to launch. LOL

Brian

You and Gerald will have to share your off road stories. Gerald is a Moderator on the Explorer forum and goes off road all the time. You can tell him about your off-road excursions with your Camaro SS. :wow::smt043

Seriously, have fun everyone. I wish I could join you folks but I don't pull boats with my Explorer like Gerald does.:smt009

Dave,
Come on over, I'm sure between First Born & MS Judy we could find a place for you.

Now Dave my experience with the gravel trap at Road Atlanta is between you and I. LOL

By the way Dave, I have a Cummins that will pull that boat of yours all over the Carolinas. If it will pull a 24ft trailer loaded for a show, it should at least pull a SR like yours. LOL

We will indeed have a blast. One of these days we have to get down to yours and Wesley's waters.

Dave did not get to see Offroad Dancer get on the trailer behind the Explorer and then watch as that little Explorer pulled that big boat up and out of the water at Lake Murray. There was a few of us setting and watching to see what happened. We were even discussing what would probably happen and none of it included pulling up and out of the water.

Gerald.........I helped out. You now have two balls.

BTW.......have you ever replaced the "no charge" factory installed squeaky seals on the front end of your Explorer. I can't stand mine anymore but I am not sure this a DIY job.

Dave

LOL Nolan. (BTW - a 4x4 transfer case with low range gearing does miracles). What are you doing next weekend? There's still room for a few more :smt001

Thanks Dave. Lately I've been embarrassed to let my wife see me naked.... now life can get back to normal at home

As for the Explorer question, I've replaced everything on my front suspension so I guess the answer is yes I've done it. As a matter of fact I've now truly replaced everything..... I've converted it from a torsion suspension to a coilover setup with QA1 racing shocks and HyperCo coils and dumped the torsion bars completely  I'll PM you about the squeak.

Okay, back to Keowee. I've received contact info from the following which suggests this is our Labor Day at Lake Keowee group as it now stands. If anyone else thought they sent me info I haven't got it yet so please PM me. I'll email all on the list with the contact info tonight.

VHF: Since this is a lake excursion and not saltwater I originally thought that half of us would not have VHF, but it looks like Brian is the only one. Brian that means everyone else will get to talk about you behind your back  Maybe you could score a handheld before the trip if you're interested, or someone might have an extra. Also, do we want to agree to a certain channel (besides 16) beforehand? This is home for both Sweet Surrender and Ringy Dinghy so maybe one of you have a channel suggestion (?)

Schedule and "Base Camp": The way this is starting to shape up, it appears that we will meet at Keowee Marina at 10am and cruise the lake from there. Lunch at the waterfall or a beach nearby, then use that place as a central meeting place base camp during the rest of the day as we go off after lunch to explore the rest of the lake.

I did think of one thing concerning the waterfall. By lunchtime on a holiday weekend it may have already gotten pretty crowded. While there's a beachhead at the falls, the water depth drops off very rapidly not far from shore and anchoring in the cove away from the falls is problematical. I cannot remember the depth but think it's something over 60~70ft; whatever it is it is deep enough to make anchoring and then rafting up kinda impossible.

We could try to raft/meet along the shore away from the beach, but if that doesn't work I'd like to suggest an alternate location which is a large beach just north of the waterfall. If you look at the lake map, directly north of the waterfall is a pencil-thin stretch of land jutting out into the lake ending in an "almost-island" that forces you to make an east turn to go around it before continuing north up the lake. There is a large beach in the cove on the west side of that pencil-thin stretch of land and the water stays shallow going out into the lake there. That may end up being an easier spot to use than the waterfall on Saturday.

Gerald I will look into getting one, but that probably won't happen. I guess I will know why my ears are burning them.LOL

I like this idea better than the falls. We have a little stainless grill that we use on our swim platform to cook dogs and burgers, so a shallow beach makes it easier to do lunch for us.

Sounds like a plan to me. I'm just hopping I can make it. I've already got the trailer ready to go and pulled MS Judy from the Marina today. There is a couple things I need to address while I got her out of the water.

Are do buffen on MS Judy to shine her up?

Yes it does need a good waxing. After sitting in the lake all year there is no way it is going to look as good as yours and Wesleys. :smt089

Not sure if you read about my problems with the Clarion CMD4 head unit not displaying. Well now I don't get any sound so I ordered a reconditioned one off ebay and I'm going to swap it out. Hope I get sound back for the trip.:smt100

Okay I just emailed everyone with the participant contact info (except for Sweet Surrender who didn't give me his email address). For everyone else, let me know if you got the email since I did a lot of typing and don't guarantee error-free email distributions :smt001

Gerald, We have family, daughter, grandkids, her husband and his son, we are going to play in the SALT water, remember Wesley it really won't hurt your boat. When I first read this thread I mapped it out then found out the family was coming so I canceled that idea. It sounds like a real good plan, maybe next time. You folks have fun.
