Magma Grills

We use the baby Weber Q as well. I lace it on my standard cutting board and not only does it fit perfectly, but also will not move. Never blows out. Weber quality with the lighter always working. 5 years in the salt and still is great. A lot less than Magma. We had one of those, but by year 2, it was horrible for heating evenly and I needed a lighter to ignite it.

Somebody mentioned parts fabrication? I know I've been away from the site for a while, but I will be able to spend more time here again in the future, so if you need anything, drop me a PM, and if I can make it for you , I will.

My Magna is around 4-5 yrs old, well taken care of and works fine....shrimp, scallops, lobstertail, steaks, could be bigger in some circumstances. But I'm used to cooking in a very large wood/charcoal setup at the house, big enough for a pig. For a weekend grille or a few days out, it's fine. Not a name brand guy, but it came with...

So I found this thread looking for some answers, I’ve had the rectangular Magma for over a year now mounted on the pedestal on the swim platform. Yes, it cooks very hot.
Question 1, does anyone else have input on the “new regulator?” BBWhite Jr post 9 says no good.
I also end up mowing through the 1lb canisters.
Question 2, has anyone tried a 5lb mini tank? I was thinking it would fit easily in the trunk with the hose snaked out the shore power/water hole. Safe?
I also agree with both leveling comments. I brought it home to clean it and have been using it on the deck instead of starting up the big Weber and it does cook better level but not sure how that would be easily accomplished out on the hook.

To use propane on the boat you need to be very carful. Propane is heavier then air and will sink to the bilge. There are USCG approved boxes and ways of mounting that are safe.

Here is a quick read from BoatUS https://www.boatus.com/app/views/201812/how-to-handle-propane-on-a-boat.asp

BTW, I love Magna grills, nothing like a great steak on hook, I miss mine from the 340.

Very good read, seems my “plenty of room in the trunk” comment doesn’t hold. Now thinking about the “buy refillable 1 pounders and charge them at home.”

Having the very large Monterey II we also rip through the 1lb canisters. I considered the 5lb but couldn’t justify unknown risk when it’s easy enough to carry around a few 1lb bottles.

magma seems to be a love/hate but I really like ours, the cooking surface is huge on this one and very flare resistant. I found the newer style blue regulator made the heat a lot more controlled

I keep a five pounder in my truck in this boat no issues. It is vented low on both side of the compartment so for me it is a non issue. On my last boat I installed it in the Laz in a propane sealed box with a vent line overboard. I think refilling and storing those little tanks is more dangerous. I can’t tell you how many people have come to me asking for propane showing me a rusted 1lb can saying “it must have leaked” and I need to refill it.

Hmm, I will do more research but I have to say tongue in cheek, if it’s empty, rusty and you didn’t use it?!? My saying of “nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool” applies

My question has to do with uneven heating......I too have very hot area to the right and not so hot to the left. I've taken that sucker apart and completely cleaned and scrubbed the burner tube and the heating element to no avail. Does anyone know why this happens?

I have heard so many negative things about Magma grills like uneven heat, blowing out, starter, expensive that I have stayed away from them.
The Weber Q’s are great I have two but they stay at the dock, they are just too heavy and bulky for the transom locker.
For the boat I buy these cheap Walmart table tops….they use to be $20 they are now $35. I keep them for two years then get a new one. I have a small duffel bag for it to catch any debris that might rattle out and throw it in the transom. It works good enough.

Post 21 talks about keeping it level, I will add some fact to that, like I posted earlier, brought mine home to clean it then set it up on my deck table and it heats much more even. Not sure how to level it on the swim platform nor do I want to try, just get used to it until it quits then try something else.

I actually smoked a pork butt on my Magma over the holidays. Was about a 4-5 hour cooking time. Debated posting pictures and how I kept the heat low. Let me know if anyone wants to see.

Turned out really good. Planning on doing beef short ribs on our next trip.
Pictures please!

I’d love to see em!

Mine is the same and I just learned to rotate the food from side to side in addition to flipping.

I’m sure the burner tube could be re-engineered to have different size holes in particular places to distribute the lpg evenly. I am not that engineer (thermo or mechanical, maybe?) but there are lots of smart people here…maybe someone else wants to solve that problem for Magma
