Memorial Day trip to Port Lucaya

I just talked to Hansen - He says that all the boats that went out turned back because it was just too nasty.

Joining him up at Houstons for a Beer right now.

Wise move...not worth the risk. The idea is to have an enjoyable trip...not a survival mission.

Okay, the Armada was blow back on to land. Skipper's meeting tonite seems to have come to a consensus to go to Boca Chita Key for five boats. One other in the fleet is going with me to Key West.

Neptune is playing hard ball down here just now.

With all this talk of rough seas I sure hope all you guys double checked your spares locker.....I mean, Hey.....in 4-6 footers......you never know when the Jose Cuervo and Captain Jack will colide and spring a leak.....having a spare bottle on board will surely ease the worries....

Enjoy this great trip.......post pics....but 'try' and keep the gloating down a bit ....Oh....and blurr up those photos of the crystal clear water too....that really get's my goat!!!..

Can't loose by heading to the Keys!!! Know you'll all have a great time!!!

Bimini with the Bahamas Fling is June 18-21....(captains meeting June 17) How about joining up and coming over?? I think there are about 13 or 14 boats signed up so far...

I'll start a separate thread for it over the weekend..

Looks good.

I'd get some feedback on Holiday Isle. I was there about a month ago and was really disappointed. Very run down and nothing like it was in it's heyday. Just tired.

Thanks for the feedback on Holiday Isle- I remember it to be a hopping place with a great Tiki bar, but that was about 5 or more years ago.

My trip is still in the planning phase so any resort type marina in Key Largo would work- I am going to start a new thread on my trip an dmaybe I can get some recommendations.

Hello everyone, the Odyssey and her crew arrived safely home in Delray at about 6:00 pm tonight (Monday). White Pearl and About Time also got home safely this afternoon. Ship O Fools and Miss N Mountains should be relaxing right now in Hawks Cay after swimming with the dolphins and Chad & Vic should also be golden.

The trip didn't exactly go as planned but we had an absolutely awesome time this weekend. I will post the details of our trip in a day or two, along with pictures. It was a long ride home and after 4 days of non-stop partying and cleaning the boat for three hours after a 6 hour ride, I AM TIRED.

Before I sign off for the night, I just want to say that the people we met on this trip are just fantastic. I would go on a trip to anywhere with all of them. When you see the pictures, you'll understand.

More soon,

Randy

Re: Memorial Day trip to Port Lucaya whoops Key West

LOG Entry:

Left the dock Friday @ 6:10AM in clouded skies, winds ESE @ 12-14 knots, Tide was high.

Cleared the Jetties at Port Everglades in light chop on top of 3-5 foot rollers. The Sun was still not up and I could see a sawtooth horizion, the Gulf Stream was still up and running huge. I'd made a back up reservation at A&B Marina in Key West and I knew it was time to use it and laid Asuryez's bow over and turned to a heading 181 degrees and set for Baker's Haulover Inlet some 15 miles south to jump back inside to take the ICW to the lower Keys, and spare my Dramamine stuffed Admiral a lomg rough off shore ride.

The tide was dropping and as the day wore on and water drained from the ICW seaward, I began plowing the bottom all too frequently. At Channel Five I had had enough idleing in shallow water and jumped back out to deeper water in Hawks Channel and proceeded to Key West in lite wet chop. A 12 1/2 hour run for 155 miles. Lost much time due to idling in very shallow water in Florida Bay.

Made Key West in time for a quick shower for Cap'n & Boat and Sundowners with the Crew of "Never Satisfied," which had aboard Skipper Vic & crew Tom and their companions.

Saturday we did some sight seeing

From Southern point we went to Ft Zachry Taylor

We tried to figure out how to load this cannon!

Then a stop off at Ft Taylor Beach as my buddy Vic tries to figure out "What's Next!"

Then lunch at "Louies Back Yard", a nice seaside table cloth eatery ... nice ....

The Admirals had visions of Coach and Little Switzerland dancing in their heads!

Then the Black Gang wetn too to drink grog at Sloppy Joes while the Admirals raided the shops. While there a local Personality dropped by for a beer, "Dick the Dog" was in his finest memorial Day outfit.

I'm happy to be back sitting on my fav. stool at Sloppy Joe's

Then it was off to the water front to catch the second sunset of the trip ... laying back on a lounge, sucking down a cold one and ....

Then showers for the crew of Asureyez and then back to "Never Satisfied" for Adrimal's Mess. A gormet table was served all the way!

Then Sunday, I vacilated about staying on Key West or heading back north to join the Armada at Boca Chita, my CSR buddies won (or lost depending on view point) the toss and we fueled up and ran back north to Boca Chita in time for cocktail hour.

At Boca Chita I rafted up to Odyessy who was along side. Quick clean up on the cockpit and out came my Margarita machine to run along side Ray's machine making his famous Mud Slides. After a little grog, out came the food great snacks followed by all manner of great eats (Others have thosed pics), But my top pick was "RayBeque". Yum!

Met so many new CSR pals that up to then had been Pixel Pals. It was great to meet, these skippers and their family & friends.

In the AM we held numerous cap'n meetings and then broke off at 11:30 AM north for fuel and a leisurely run back to home port.

A great time on the water!

Plan "A" = Run to Port Lucaya for a long fun weekend
Plan "B" = Run to Boca Chita in Biscayne Bay for a long weekend of fun.

Left Thurs morn at 5:30 in the dark. We made it about 5 miles offshore and there were times we were looking up at the foam on the wavetops, not fun. We head back in to try again.

NOAA report stated 2-4 slightly higher in the gulfstream.

We tried again at 9:30 am. Made it about ten miles offshore, it was sloppy and wet. We appeared to be in about 5-6 foot seas until we hit the Gulf Stream at which time the waves became 8-9 footers. It didn't take many of those to decide to return to port.

I hate NOAA....the only job where you can get it wrong every day and still have a job!

Next on to plan "B"

The armada spent the night at Bahia Mar in Ft. Lauderdale then on to Boca Chita.
We met lots of new friends and partied our brains out for 4 days.....we had a great time. I would be happy to take a trip with any of these folks, they are great people.

The interesting part is that only Odessey and I had met in person before the trip.

Ray

ps more to follow along with pics

Ray, sounds like you all had a great time.. Sorry I missed it all. Post some photos when you can.

Maybe you'll make a plan C, and join us on the Bahamas fling to Bimini June 18-21st (Captain's meeting June 17th)...

Hope to see you all soon.

Barry

Hey Plan B guys,

Even though no PLM, we had the best trip of our lives.

Jack, Randy, Mike, Ray, You guys, and your friends and families are truly great friends of ours.

Jack thank you again for the pull.

Mike and Randy thank you again for the lead on Hawks Cay. That was a lifetime highlight.

When we are done cleaning, I will start to post pics.

Let's get that next trip planned.

You guys are great!

Ken

Somehow by the grace of god I pulled the levers and pushed the buttons correctly and we got in last night at 8 pm. All kidding aside it was like a lake all the way from Marathon with 10 knot winds behind us. Been cleaning the boat all day and after 10 days of partying I"ve hit the wall.
I second what Ken, Randy and Ray have said. These were a GREAT bunch of Captains and there familys. To meet up with these folks again is tops on my priority list. Very seldom do you put different people together that got along as well as we did.

Jack
