Last year my exhaust riser was leaking so I installed a new one.
It was the end of the season, so I didn't get to really sea-trial it.

Just took the boat out and noticed the brand new riser is also leaking.

Could there be something causing them to leak, or did I just get a bad riser?

Also what do you guys think of the smoke?

The black part is fairly hot, the stainless after it is sea water cold. Water flow seems to be fine.

Well u see Mr lady taz here is what is happening with your new riser. We will first start with the leak. You don't actually have a leak, the hot air from the exhaust joined with the humidity of the engine room is causing the metal to "perspire" then traveling up the inside of the fiberglass insulation (hot air rises) then when it hits the cold past of the riser it condenses forming water droplets. This will go away when your engine room atmosphere stables out. As for the smoke and smell that indeed is the resin and epoxies burning off they're gasses and will disappear after about 4-5 hours of running time. I would just cruise with your er hatch open for a little while:smt043:grin:

I just posted over on the 48 Sedan Forum, but I have a burn hole in my Blue exhaust coupler. I believe the holes in the water jacket to be plugged, causing the excessive heat and the burn. However, I also have a bit of soot just after the fiberglass hardcoat on the steel section. Indicating to me an exhaust leak. Is this what you noticed? Or did you have another sort of leak? Did you buy the replacement from Deangelo's or elsewhere? Thank you

I'll help ya out a little lady taz is usually pretty quiet around here and since I've seen his in person I know a little.
His stainless elbows were leaking raw water. Appeared to be at the welds but it was also under the fiberglass insulation so kinda hard to tell. I'm pretty sure he did not have any excess heat and nothing burned a hole anywere. I did not see any soot anywere. He did order them from deangelos and there was a pretty good lead time for them to build it. They build to order. They do not stock them. Maybe a couple weeks if I remember correctly. Pretty sure the part number was stamped on the elbow itself. After he installed it he had issues with it smoking and still dripping. This is completely normal. The smoke is the adhesives and chemicals used to put the fiberglass insulation on burning off and will go away in about 5 hours and the water dripping is "sweat" so when you do replace them this is all normal. When he first noticed the sm ok e and water drips we did not know it was normal so I helped do some research on the elbows and found out his initial problem of a leaky elbow was pretty common. The welds are known to crack and start leaking after however many years. I'm guessing it's time for yours to. Now u said u have a clog. No water flow so your elbow is getting hot and burning the blue collar. This seems to me like a completely different issue the he had. Your clogged some were and he cracked. I think u should figure out what's clogged before installing the new or cleaned elbow. I know little to nothing about diesels but reading alot on car im pretty sure cleaning the cooling system is normal procedures every bunch of years. Maybe your just overdue and scaled up so bad you have no water flow. Anyway that's basically all I know if it helps great if not sorry I couldn't be of assistance to you.

Thanks for the information. As an update, I pulled the riser off yesterday. Cleaned out the shower nozels on the water jacket and found 3+ zincs, presumably from the tranny cooler and previous owner limited maintenance. The zincs had plugged the shower and created the hot spot that burned the Trident blue elbow. Obviously was extremely hot as those elbows are rated to 350 degrees. Meatime talked with Deangelo and due to soot all over back side of riser convinced me to replace the riser due to potential leak. I did not have a water leak, just soot before the mixer. They have them stocked. Should have parts early next week and be back in business. Thanks for the feedback.

Greg,

I too have a leak and wasn't sure if the riser is repairable or needs to be replaced. I get black droplets of soot on the tranny. Watching the video doesn't make me feel any better but I would tend to agree with X regarding the smoke. Verdict is still out regarding the leak. I've never seen mine leak. Any update on that aspect.

The old one leaked from the welds. Leaked salt water. The drips in the video is actually fresh water. It's "sweeting" you can't leak fresh water when there's no fresh water to leak correct?

There was no mistaking that the old one was leaking. It started suddenly, not as droplets. Is was as though it was pumping out water. I guess I was just nervous after seeing droplets coming off of the new one and thought it too was leaking.

I assume the droplets were condensation as it hasn't done it again. The first day I went out with the new riser installed it was very humid and early in the season so the water was pretty cold. I have since installed the riser on the other engine (just because) and both of them have stopped smelling and smoking.

They were fairly pricey, but I am very happy with the fix. The fiberglass on the old ones was loose and generating 'dust' at the edges.

I assume the fiberglass could be removed, and the riser repaired and the re-glassed, but I didn't want to monkey with it. I still have one 'good' riser if you want it, but it has close to 2000 hours on it now.

o.k., so glad to hear you are happy with the result. Guess I need to do the same......Thanks! X, I thought maybe Greg was cooling the raw water side of the engines running the water thru his "Industrial Size water maker first so that there is no salt water coming in contact with his engines!!! HAh! wouldn't that be something.... Hmm..... I may need to work on that idea......

:smt038 that was good! He's also working a system that skims the top of the water for unused deisel , filters it and puts it back into his tanks! Economical and environmentally friendly! Yea I may be a little gullible sometimes
