Official 380 Thread

Is a 50 to 70k increased price sound right for just 4 years newer? I'm looking at 650 hrs for 120k in mostly brackish water of upper Chesapeake. What is the engine life for the 8.1 and zf trans? Survey in is 2 weeks(fingers crossed).

I am about to install a dedicated Victron 2000 multi inverter / charger with a 206 ah Lithium battery in the port bedroom cabinet. This will run both the Frig and Freezer plus the KVH sat, dish Wally and small TV. Interested to hear if anyone else has done a similar project?
What did the set up cost and expected install time?

I honestly don't know what sounds right for the price difference, but if you reached an agreed price, well that's the price both of you are happy with.

There's lots of great information on this website regarding the engines and that boat, I encourage you to read through that. Probably a good idea to get an engine survey as well so someone can walk through the engines with you and teach you some things.

I bought my boat and Kent Island Maryland, lots of great resources there.

I spent just shy of $4000 for the 3 100Ah batteries, the Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger, bluetooth module, color control screen and various small components.
Did all of the wiring and install myself, so don't have that. Given the months it took me with about 3 iterations, the install labor would not be cheap.
Also installed ABYC ELCI breakers to bring up to current standards, as well as replacing the Galvanic Isolators with a single more robust ProSafe 60amp unit.
Planning on doing the same with the new to me 380DA but one thing at a time (CAT 3116 currently sitting on a pallet).

Not a gas engine guy but I'm pretty sure they get around 1300 hours. All depends how you (and the previous owner) maintained them. My boat was in salt water its whole life, so I'm dealing with the corrosion. But I knew that up front and priced accordingly.
The $120K could be a great deal or a horrible price.. depends on too many factors. Discuss it with your surveyor. Who are you using for the survey?
Make sure you switch to Aluminum 'zincs' for the upper Chesapeake. I've found that is more effective in brackish water.
Good luck with the survey.

Mostly all fresh water experience for me. $120k seems like the right number right now. Could be 10k lower if it had 7.4’s

I would say your fine if it surveys good, those motors are solid, it properly maintained, same with the transmissions. They will have you scratch head from time to time with the sensors, but if I had the choice, I would prefer the 8.1’s…. And I am completely happy with my 7.4 horizons after almost 4 seasons

@Chris-380 is right.
The oil analysis will tell you a LOT. Even though my starboard engine looked rough and the generator wasn't running, all of the oil and tranny fluid analyses came back all green check marks.
I was so concerned I paid for two surveys...one for the boat and another by a CAT certified mechanic for the engines. Well worth the $$.

Just out of curiosity what was found on the cat engine mechanic survey vs the boat survey? I was planning on doing the samples too.

Where do I start...A hull surveyor typically is not "an engine guy" but in some cases they are. They will know and look for things the hull surveyor will not. If your hull surveyor says "I can do the engines too..." I would think twice.

On my boat the diesel engine surveys revealed good engines that needed service interval maintenance, only because the PO could not document anything had been done. They found some minor things that were not working as well. For me it was piece of mind especially since diesels were new to me.

As @mrsrobinson stated, the hull survey guy is more than likely not an engine guy. Knowing that I had a guy who had personally worked on hundreds of engines like mine, meant he knew what to look for and also could discern if something looked bad but really wasn't much of an issue. The yard wanted to pull the starboard engine to get the generator out. He explained to me how to get it out without removing the engine. He noticed things as small as the nut on the bottom of the throttle adjustment clamp needed to be replaced, as well as the C clips for the ends of the cables.
Given that the diesel 380 is really a pair of engines/transmissions with a boat attached to them (money wise), I was able to ask him directly "is this a good deal?".

If I wanted the couches redone would it make sense to refoam and new vinyl or would I just buy replacement pieces? They aren't in bad shape but I have a bad back.

Depends on how they feel. I told my guy to replace the foam if needed, but he said it was good, not worth the extra money…

Timely post. Just removed all of the seating from the boat. Going to take to two local shops to get quotes on recovering.

Have a question about the vinyl panels on each side (see picture with yellow circle). How do these come off?

They are held on by plastic mounting "trees". Use a plastic trim removal tool and pry them straight off.

I got all the cabin lights replaced with LED except for this guy, looks like the back of it is sealed, how do I get the back off?
