Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

Hey Ya'll,

Need to swap an engine mount (last owner let the sea water pump drip on it and managed to cover it with enough paint for it to get missed on the inspection, now it blew up with rust).

Thinking of using an air bag jack to support the engine while I swap the mount and possibly swapping all the vibe absorber - Wayska Exhaust Jack 4 Ton, Exhaust Air Jack 8800LBS, Inflatable Car Jack Off-Road Jack for Vehicle SUV Car Truck Rescue https://a.co/d/8oQGdRA

Thoughts?

TIA!

How often do the water filters need to be changed?

Short answer: You test your coolant annually and your action depends on the result of the test, which you determine by using the test strips:

I do most of my own stuff, but had a marine mechanic out here for a shaft alignment and he recommended a bottle jack, but I can see that happening with slope in the engine pan. Will keep you guys updated on how it goes.

My buddy and I replaced a transmission on his 400DB with 6CTAs. A bottle Jack would not fit under. But we were jacking up the engine to remove the transmission, so much less space under it than under the engine mount bracket. We used a heavy duty automotive scissors jack I had. Put down some two by fours under the Jack to level out the slope. I thought I had pictures but can’t find them.

RE motor mount change: I just had this done, all 8. I was going to attempt to do this, but decided to hire a guy to do it. Mainly due to my big size and limited access to engine mount to stringer bolts (outboard strb engine, trans end for example).

I had to replace the mounts for the same reason, leaking SW pumps in the past rendered those 2 mounts un-adjustable, plus they are 23 years old, so I decided to do all of them.

It took a week to do all. He used a scissor jack and pieces of wood to create a base for the jack. I've heard sandbags can be used. On my boat, they had to unbolt and lower the coolant tank to gain enough overhead clearance to jack the engine high enough to R&R the mounts. 2 mounts had to be cut out.

Bill: $4k for labor, $1,800 for mounts. I did get quotes as high as $8k total.

It has been a project on the "to-do" list for a while so glad to have it done. Also, the boat is a bit quieter with the new mounts.

Good morning,
Heading home this morning, if I come up in rpm’s more than approx 750 on port engine, I get a water temperature alarm and as quick as rpm falls below that it goes away.
I veryfied the engine mounted gauge with dash and all indicate approx 160. I can see water flowing out of exhaust and using heat gun all around engine seems normal temps and similar to stbd engine.
I’m guessing a faulty sensor but where and how to check or other ideas?

That is odd. Do you have a raw water temp alarm (normally on the wet exhaust elbow right after the turbo)? Would check those with the IR temp gun if you have them.

It is odd that RPM is causing the the faulty. I had my oil pressure sender go bad and it was constantly sounding; verified manually, unplugged and pressed home.

Another thought is that you have a wire shorting to ground which is how the alarm is triggered. May want to see if throttle linkage is rubbing something or the RPM are causing the sensor wire to a ground out.

Not sure what the connection with the rpm is other than amount of water flow?
Where is water temp sensor located? Maybe I can unplug and see, check wiring

If the gauges are 160 at the helm and the manual guage you are probably good on the sweet water side. If you have a raw water alarm on the elbow, the water flow could be an issue (seperate from engine temps).

I am out of town so can't run down to the dock and verify. My memory wants to say the sensor is fuel injection pump side near the coolant filter and oil pressure sender (not the oil temperature sender which is by the oil/coolant heat exchanger). It should have just one wire going to it.

I’ll check for a sensor on the elbow when I stop.

This is from sbmar

No sensors in the elbow. checked the regular temp sensor as in the picture above and the nut had lossedned up. Took the wire and washers off and cleaned and re tightened. All good now.
thank you all!

Hi All,

Have been soaking my turbo-to-exhust bolts for over a week in Kroil, they aren't budging. Besides getting out the torch and heating are there any other tricks to getting them out?

TIA!

Kevin

Turbocharger to exhaust manifold is studs with nuts. Should be no problem but if it is, heat the nuts.

I'm struggling with the exhaust outlet of the turbo to the stainless elbow with the shower. Probably gonna have to get the torch out.
