What is best place to order new lettering for boat name? Is it do-it yourself job?

Does old lettering just peel off typically?

thanks.

boatus has great options for lettering. They have an area on their website where you can design and see what it will look like. My lettering came from there, then I got someone from MarineMax where the boat was being serviced to apply.

Neat thing about BoatUS - is once you work out the lettering for the boat - you can then order smaller sizes of the same exact format that you can apply to coolers, etc.

Applying the lettering is not a DIY job for me - I am not that good with lining things up. You may be - a lot of people do it themselves.

When the old letters come off, there may be ghosting - might have to have some compounding to clean up the old ghosting before you put new letters on.

I had mine made at a local shop that does auto window tinting & lettering. Walked in, then 15 minutes (10 of that was picking the font) later, walked out.
Applying was easy as could be. Being overly careful I spent an hour measuring, but it only took 2 minutes to apply it.

Spray a little soapy water on the transom, apply the lettering and get it where you want it. Then squeegee out the little bot of water along with the air bubble. Dries quick and you're done.

They will come in a strip and very easy to apply. Use a hair dryer or the sun to get the old letters good and warm and just pick at a corner and pull it off. After removing the old ones, use acetone on a rag to remove the old adhesive. As mentioned above, may need to compund to remove ghosting. Check out uTube for how to apply new. That is what I did and piece of cake. The soapy water trick makes it very forgiving....

I found its hard to completely eliminate the ghosting. For my cases, the area under the old letters never saw sun and never oxidized. So it was really shiny and sharp color just like out of the factory. I never worked hard enough to get the rest of the transom back to that factory level color and shine, to completely blend in with the area under the old letters. It also means I know when the transom has oxidized again. The ghosting starts to show up again.

Good luck.

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I think that wet sanding will take the ghosting out. Of course you would have to redo the lettering, but you could eliminate it if it was worth the trouble to you.

Hey Molson, where did you get the design done. I am in Toronto and would love a Canadian source.
