Good day everyone. We just purchased a Laguna 20 1989, and we have a question regarding the battery compartment. Can the 1/2" plywood walls which hold electrical main switch be removed or they there also for structural support for the boat?
thank you for assistance.

Are they glassed in? Got a couple pics?

Good morning Dennis.
The 1/2 plywood is not fiberglassed in.. I will post image later today.

It sounds like it might just be a simple screw-in "divider" then - but I'll reserve judgement till I see the pics :)

Here are a couple of images.. you may be right.. one side of the boards are bolted to a steel angle and the other side looks like it screwed into another piece of wood. Our main question is if these 2 boards are needed to support the boat deck.

Don't remove them. Two 1/2" plywood boards on edge provide a lot of vertical support and appear to be typical of the under deck structural support throughout the boat rather than being slap on battery separators/switch holders. But, do whatever Lazy Daze says.

The size of that opening is small enough whereby the deck, itself, wouldn't generally need the support - especially with the rain gutter there (which makes it stronger). The pictures don't show how (if at all) the boards are secured to the deck. If they're not secured fast to the deck (essentially in tight contact), then they're obviously not giving any support to the deck. It's kinda hard for me to say for sure without seeing everything... but I'm leaning towards them not being structural. Structural items are typically glassed in.

Wondering why you would want to remove them?
Good morning Mitch..
The battery compartment shows a lot of water exposure and we want to either replace the panels or get rid of them all together. Since we are going to move the battery switch to a more convenient location.

Good morning Lazy Daze,
Thank you for feedback and advice. It is greatly appreciated.

This is fishy. If you are planning on smuggling, just ask us. The area just needs paint. Thick copper cables are hard to work with and ohm's law dictates that they must get thicker when extended. I'm happy with one battery with a USBed lithium jump pack on board. Your selector switch is also a disconnect which should be used when relying on one battery. I had a friend who was in the business and got boarded by the ATF. Turned out they were unconcerned about the hold full of dope but wanted to inspect the barrel of currency. It was all spendable and they said "Adios."
