I've been looking at RAM mounts for mounting a Garmin 740s at my helm. The current GPSMAP 162 is mounted to the left of the instrument panel, but there isn't enough room there for the 740s. I'd like to mount it on the top of the instrument cluster, but the sliding door and head ceiling/aft wall make access to that area difficult for a direct mount to the dash.

Alternatives I'm considering are a clamp mount to a windshield support rod (only 5/8" diameter, though) or suction cup to the windshield. How do you guys like these mounts? Do they allow much movement of the GPS (vibration, etc) which would make it tough to read? How secure are the mounts?

Thanks for your input!

Thanks Bryan, I've been following that thread but didn't want to hijack it with a Sport Cruiser question . Actually, the thread strayed into wiring so I thought I'd start a new one.

I've always gone with hard mounting options for the same reasons you are thinking. On your boat, the two gauge panels can be removed in just a few minutes and it gives good access - if you wanted to go that way.

I use 2 Ram Mounts on my boat. One is a hard mounted arm that brings my raymarine MFD closer to me and is more adjustable for various viewing angles. I used the original holes drilled by Sea Ray. The other Ram Mount I use if for my ipad. That one is held on by suction cups. Both work great with little vibration. I give them 2 thumbs up.

I want to put a few of the Talking adapters in for such options, and but mostly for holding fishing rods. I think a quick release up by the dash would look good and allow you to experiment a bit with where and how.
