My project today was to investigate how to get my radar to overlay my chart. The manual details how to do this but what it doesn't tell you is that you need a heading sensor. A heading sensor runs about $600. The other option is to install v4.3 software which is downloadable from the Raymarine site. The software update allows you to use the GPS heading when in motion. The radar wil get confused when not in motion which is why Ray removed the feature from subsequent software updates. I'm willing to use it this way since I typically would only use the overlay function during limited visibility situations.

Just thoughti would would share my findings. The more I learn about the c-series the more robust it gets. I was considering an upgrade to a newer touch screen model but the c-series works great once you learn how to use it.

I'm almost sure I have done that on my E120 without a heading sensor. I would have to read up on it to do it again. When I get a minute I will look.

I don't have a heading season and my radar overlay works just fine.

If you c series has the software version 4.29 or 4.30 then yes it will work. Just make sure you don't install the latest updates or you lose that functionality.

Correct. You can download and install v4.3 and get that feature back.

I think it's 4.29. The Raymarine site outlines the versions changes.

Here is a picture. The purple overlay is the radar. You can see it picks up the shore and the two purple blobs are boats ahead and to the port side.

Just to clarify.

So is 4.3 the last software update that allows overlay without heading sensor?

Correct. Anything newer than 4.3 will not allow overlay.

Is this only the older C series units? I have a C95 with v14 of the software and I get a radar overlay using gps data. There is a message that pops up when you stop moving that says it does't have heading data, but I hardly find that confusing.

Heres Raymarines info on the software versions:
