Recalls by HIN

I've put a deposit on a new unsold '08 240SD that per another thread in the maintenance section has a HIN that is subject to a Federal recall on the DTS system.

First - is there a way we can find out what all recalls exist by HIN?

Second - is there a way to check by HIN whether the recall has been made/completed?

Last - should I demand a different HIN one that is not affected by the "recall"?

Thanks!

As the owner of a 2008 240 Sundeck with DTS, I am certainly interested in the recall. Hadn't heard a thing about it.

OK...I have read through all this and it just looks like an update. Worst case is, if you do not get it, you throw an error message and are down to 65% throttle at some random point...which certainly would be annoying. I was afraid it was about something blowing up randomly...which would have been a bit more off-putting.

IMHO - The dealer should take care of the fix before they deliver it and have the documentation to go along with it.

Recall page was helpful; however I noticed this issue with the DTS was not included. I assume it is because it is a Mercury recall vs. Sea Ray. ?

Thanks for the info!

Yeah, just call the dealer and have them prove it's addressed.

Ask the dealer for their internal work order/make ready order which will tell you exactly what work was done to make the boat ready. Ask them to check the boat for recalls and bulletins and have them confirm the results. Do not accept verbal statements as to what work was done. If you don't have it in writing, it was not done. If the dealer will not provide you with copies of work that was done then don't accept the boat.

Only safety related issues will cause the USCG to issue a recall. The boat must be less than 5 years old and the condition a violation of Federal Regulations or pose a substantial risk of personal injury. Finally, the defect must cause a failure or dangerous condition that occurs suddenly or without warning. Since the DTS goes to "limp mode", the defct here does not appear to qualify for CG recall.

I didn't search the database again, but Sea Ray has very few CG recalls considering the number of models and production numbers involved.

I suspect what you are looking for is a Technical Service Bulletin issued by Mercruiser for the DTS since they are the vendor for this item for Sea Ray and for other boat manufacturers as well. Sometimes the Tech. Service bulletins are made public and sometimes they are not. The only way to know on a late model boat is to ask your dealer.

Guys........this looks like a simple software upgrade. Don't try to make a federal case out of it, the boat isn't going to vaporize and dispatch its occupants to the planet Nebulon. The dealers handle this stuff all the time and you don't need nor will you ever get a court order certifying the upgrade was done.

Yes, go into your dealer and demand all this paperwork to verify that they are doing their jobs correctly. Then, the next time when you have a small problem and need something fixed in a hurry, be sure to remember what you demanded from them while you pay a bill that is incredibly high and took 2-3 weeks to fix because they had to prepare paperwork for you because they know you want everything in writing.

You need to make peace with your dealer at the beginning, makes owning a boat much much more enjoyable. Piss you dealer off, and you will hate boating whenever something goes wrong.

All DTS boats with a HIN of K7 - E8 in the ninth and tenth position, in conjunction with 07 or 08 in the eleventh and twelfth position, need the command module updated to version 76

I'll make it short and sweet for everyone:

Bascially they had defects in potentiometers in the ERC(electronic remote control).
It will trigger a 6 second alarm, and you will get a fault code on your VV or SmartCraft.

When the fault occurs ECM goes into guardian which only allows 65% throttle. The unsafe part is that after the fault is triggered the shift position remains in the same gear, Until the ECM is reset.

Just a HEADS UP for everyone, it is a federal recall so the repair is on Mercury.

As SR Tech has written this sure sounds like a safety concern to me. I have rec'd notices from Mercury on Federal Boat Safety Act recalls(not this one). My dealer told me that they take care of their inventory if a notice applys to it. There should be no reason that a dealer wouldn't answer your question on an item like this if asked and certainly no reason for them to make your relationship after hell for asking.

Agreed that the dealer will update to new "control module" version and I will receive the completed work order (in writing). All very good advice considering this is just good business practice as well as dealer service.

Thanks everyone for your perspectives!
