streaming movies on smart tv

Probably why they tell me it’s not available. We live in Millsboro, DE. Boat stays in Crisfield, MD.
Don't believe the online T-Mobile Home internet availability tool. The tool told me Home Internet wasn't available in my area, but I have some friends who have great T-Mobile cell service. I went into a T-Mobile store and walked out with an internet gateway.

Yes that’s true I’ve heard the same , I believe they may want to limit the quantities of units in each area but I do not know how true that statement is

They base it off of the 5G signal. I was told by Verizon, the biggest in my area, that 5G service wasn't available. I was also told by T-Mo that my service would be limited but still shipped me the SIM. I will say at my house I have zero signal with either Verizon or T-Mo. A mile in either direction and I start to get service.

I believe this is the case. I switched to T-Mobile for cell service earlier this year, and got a lot of offers to add home internet. They clearly stated that they only offer a certain number of home internet routers per area. I surmise that they calculate the available bandwidth by geographic location and tower capacity, and don't want to overburden the infrastructure.

I have found that the home internet routers do not have the same throughput as my iPhones, and this seems to be by design. I've heard that T-Mobile prioritizes mobile device traffic/speed over home internet.

To wit, at home my iPhone regularly gets 600+ mpbs down/65+ mbps up. The T-Mobile home router typically sees about 215+ mbps down/ and variable upload speeds of 20-55 mbps. That said, I have no issues with any streaming services that I use at home. Caveat emptor that speeds are highly location-specific....

Problem is that cell service here is sketchy. Not much point in spending $50/month for something that will barely work. I think SL is the way to go.

On the cheap side, we watch very little tv on the boat. I have an iPhone and use a lightning port to hdmi to plug my phone directly into the tv. This lets me watch all my streaming directly from the phone without chewing up my hotspot minutes.

Unless you are under a covered metal roof as I am going to be.

I know those dish/array's ain't cheap, but can't you get a used one for stationary mounting on top of your covered slip?

I guess if it were allowed. But the issue then comes in to play with multiple array's in that each array is it's own bill of $150/month at a minimum. I have both right now so that's $200/month for internet.

So, with today's technology, they can't tell if you are running 1 or both?
Don't mean to be rash, I just don't like Double Dipping.

Yes they can tell and why each one is a $150/month. So two SL's two $150.mth bills.

Sorry, what I meant was, can't you switch/shut down between the onboard dish to the home port fixed mounted dish, obviously a cable/outlet/connection to the boat and switching device would be required.

These issues are in my future. Thanks

You can, but it takes affect on the next billing cycle. Can’t just make a clean switch. If you turn one on the 15th it goes live right away. If you turn the other off on the 15th, if shuts down on the 1st.

Only by the month of your billing cycle. So it is of no real benefit to shut down/turn on. Unless your doing so for more then one month, like over the winter. If I could do that with the cell contract I'd be very happy. But at least the cell is only $50/mth and the SL can be put on hold for the winter.

I might be too. Probably not next year but year after. Thinking about joining Wicomico Yacht Club. Nice covered slips but shallow.

I bought a slip over the winter, so why I have both and probably will continue to.

So if I buy an HP SL dish and put it on the shelf area under the center front window, will it receive through the glass and mesh cover? I’ll mount it on a mast when I do the electronics upgrade this winter. Through the windshield is a temporary solution.

If it is facing north, then possibly, but some glass filters microwave(s), especially polycarbonate. Your best served if it is outside with no obstruction.

Worth a try I guess. My backup is to put it under the fly bridge bimini. The small dish might be easier. I think I can get a mount that adapts it to a marine antenna mount, but I’ve convinced myself I need the HP dish.

I am not using the HP array, and it works just fine. The HP array does get better throughput due to the larger array surface. It would be best served on a marine mount up top. I had that setup for almost a year and will be going back to that soon. I need to take the DTV dome off first and mount it there.
