His most notable anecdote became to be known as LA Speed Check.

That hurts my heart. First heard that story a long time ago, possibly read about it on a Usenet news group.

I live in Dayton, OH, in the early 90s was driving by Wright-Patterson AFB when the SR-71 was coming in to land at the Air Force Museum. I pulled my car off to the side of the road and watched the airshow the plane put on for 20 minutes, which I assume was burning off excess fuel before landing on the short runway at Area B. I can still feel the sound from those engines.

Proud Mary was one of the first songs I learned with my junior high garage band. I think some of her best and most unknown work was on Frank Zappa's Over-Nite Sensation album singing back up with the Ikettes. RIP
