Way to Go Coasties!

300SR, I'm a bit pi$$ed by your response. That's much akin to saying that cops get paid to protect us and if they get shot in the process, well that's what they get paid to do.

These Coasties are heroes. They put themselves in positions of jeopardy to save the lives of hard working fishermen. Yes, they get paid to be there, but it's not a job that I would want to do, and I suspect most of us wouldn't want it. Speaking for myself, I can't imagine ever jumping out of a chopper (or being lowered) into near freezing waters in high winds and tall waves. Yes, these guys do it on a fairly regular basis....and thank GOD for people who are willing to risk their life to save the life of a complete stranger.

Well said! Could not agree more! Our son is a C130 Hercules Commander in the USCG and therefore we know what these heroes really do. Our son will tell you himself how extremly brave the swimmers are, especially in Alaska in the winter! And, they don't get paid a bunch for what they do either! What these guys do to save others lives would scare the $$!t out of most of us. They do it because they just love what they do, otherwise they could never do it. Notwithstanding, that many of them risk their lives to go out and save others in bad weather when some should never have been out to sea in the first place ie: small single engine boats miles off shore with no safety equipment etc., (especially in Florida.)

Thank GOD for the Coasties who risk their lives to save others, and for those that have lost their own lives in carrying out their duties. Many folk don't even realise that they also patrol the coast line at night looking out for us all while we sleep safely. There's far more to the Coasties than most realize and believe me they don't join up just for the pay!

I really don't care if your pissed at what I said. I have that right!! They are not heroes to me. Again they are doing what the get paid to! Anyone with the training can be one of them. Same with Police,Fire! After a bad incident with 5 of them I have absolutely no respect for any of them! I would rather drown then call on them if I was in trouble. Yes Not call them! They all know well beforehand what they are up against.

So take a big breath and It will be alright for you!!! TGIF

One of the few pieces of government I trust.......I saw first hand experience last summer and they were as professional as any private company or government agency could be. Our military being the other I trust and respect.....In my opinion both are providing services to this country well beyond their pay grade....

So......
the firefighters in the twin towers on 9/11 were "just doing what they get paid to do" also ???

Gosh you would rather drown if in trouble than call the Coast Guard, how sad is that, I am really sorry to read that. And, with all due respect I expect if push came to shove it would be much the same as, "there is no such thing as an atheist on a battle field", and you would be pleased to see them. Unfortunately, not anyone with training can be one of them either, so many fail at the training it is far from easy, especially the swimmers.

However, I do hope that you always have fair winds, calm seas, don't ever require their service and therefore would never need to make such an awful choice: drown or be saved................

Please don't take any friends or family with you too far from shore. If it is only you that is your choice....please don't make the "I would rather drown" decision for any one else.

When one gives respect, one usually receives respect in return. I am glad the USCG is at our service. You apparently will never need their service.

" a bad incident with 5 of them" and you condem the whole branch of service. I don't get it. I admire these people and all who serve to protect us.

What makes you so angry about the USCG and law enforcement in general? This is probably not the best place to criticize people in uniform. Are there bad apples in the coast guard? Yes. Do they make some mistakes? Yes, as evidenced in running over a boat in San Diego during a lighted boat parade killing a young boy. Should we discount the service they do while often risking their own safety? No.

Unless you can provide details that show that the acency as a whole is bad and not an isolated incedent, you are out of line.
