I always put the lid on before lifting out of the bilge. Did not want to take a chance!!
I use 5 gallon blue kerosene cans marked "Dirty Oil" specifically for my oil changes. Easy to keep closed and pick up.

It powered up during survey. Surveyors never test electronics from my experience, just check that they power up.
My surveyor ALWAYS checks the electronics and speeds and other things during the sea trial while the mechanical surveyor does their thing.

Like you said though, during the inspection in the water or on the hard the surveyor just checks for brand/model, power up, age & condition. YMMV

Mine check as well, but it's my opinion they focus their attention more on other things. If it powers up and passes a basic "it works" they check off the box.

Good news, we are FINALLY under contract!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:)
glad to hear that you are under contract!

I have the hull survey from 11/01/21. I have the engine surveys from the same date. I talked to both surveyors. I also talked to the perspective buyer who paid for the surveys. I feel comfortable with the surveys and the conversations I've had so I'm not going to do them again. I will be doing a sea trial and going through the boat myself prior to close.

I'll probably keep it in it's slip until early spring and bring it home then. At a minimum I'd like to get the after coolers serviced before taking it on a long trip. I don't want to pay for that one, but having never done it before I'll probably end up paying for it to make sure it's done right. CAT quoted me $4,000 per engine to do the after coolers, heat exchangers, and transmission coolers. Seems high to me.

Seems high to me as well. Should be that much in total for both or less I'd think.

That's going to be a fun ride home. I'd honestly look at enjoying the boat where it's slipped for a while. Kent Island and Annapolis area are awesome places to run. Be sure to stop by Red Eyes dock bar!

I can walk to red eye from where the boat is slipped now. It's about a 3-hour drive each way from home, thinking about keeping it there short-term.

Is $3500 for both engines a fair price to service the after coolers? Remove aftercoolers from both main engines. Ultrasonically clean, test and reinstall with new zincs.

If they are in that deep on the engines have the rack and valves set also; it's a no brainer.
Don't reuse that short little hose and clamps between the turbo and aftercooler; new Cat parts needed.

In fact, I replaced all the hoses under the aftercooler cover while we were cleaning the aftercoolers. Some of those little devils are almost impossible to reach with the after coolers and covers in place. And, this is in the "while you are at it" department….I'd change the thermostats and the alternator and water pump belts while you are there.

Echoing all the replacement recommendations, I did the same. The only thing I didn’t fully replace was the small house going from then water pump down, I think it goes into the block. I did replace the clamps on it but the hose was impossible without taking the housing off.

My thought was since my girlfriend's brother-in-law has never done their raw water side of these engines to let a shop do that. Him and I can do everything else at a later date. I'm hearing you say while the shops doing the after coolers to let them do everything else since they will already be in there?

The same shop quoted me 10,500 to do everything. I thought I could save the $7,000, and do the rest myself with my girlfriend's brother-in-law and learn along the way.

He said he can do everything including the rack and valves, and the injectors if I buy the tools for the injectors.

What? Why doesn't he help pull the aftercoolers if you are trying to save costs? The only thing easier to remove is the cover. Any radiator shop can cook the thing and pressure test. Or you pull and take it to Cat to clean.... The Hx and gear cooler are easy to pull also. You can clean them or take to someone to clean.
Purchase the zinc's at Boatzinc.com.

I would just add the aftercooler and turbo hoses to the list for the mechanic you’re paying for the aftercooler removal. They are near impossible to replace with the aftercooler on so you want to do them now. The other stuff you can do with your brother in law
