Had the same problem with my 454 powered 268 and the admiral didn't like the ride at 24mph in rough seas, nor did she like wallowing around off plane which was even more uncomfortable! I decided to remove the rather small trim tabs and put the largest width and deepest tabs without changing the position of the ram (can't recall the size now) and WOW - what an improvement!!
I recall being able to plane at 18mph which allowed a much more comfortable ride, especially with a lot of cross chop. This would allow the bow to cut into waves with more of a pushing feel than a slapping or "wham" action that was definitely NOT healthy for anything attached to the inside of the hull.
It also helped the boat be more stable on calmer days on plane. With a little tab deployed along with the drive up it seemed to plant the stern firmer in the water. Before this the boat always seemed tippy on plane, like it was balancing on the head of a pin. Any wind or shifting of passengers would set it on one side or the other. Definitely better with the larger tabs!
Pics, and your thoughts on the performance details would be much appreciated.
Hi
I am not sure I am in the right place but I am looking at a 1988 268 Sundancer. It has a 454 with Alpha one. I am sure the engine is not original. It has 330 hours on it and pics of the engine look like its fairly new. I know those early brunswick years were prone to stringer and transom rot so I will have a guy check for that. The guy has all of the service records and the interior from the pics looks brand new. I love the wood on the older boats. The broker said it was the cleanest one he has ever seen.
My main question is that the head is the portable type. I would like to replace it with a marine head and holding tank set up. Is that possible without breaking the bank. Is it a difficult job? I would most likely not do it myself as the idea of cutting a hole in the bottom to install the seacock makes me too nervous.
I posted this on another part of the site because I was not sure which part would be more appropriate.
Thanks

Bruce,
You are looking at the same boat I have. Definitely check for stringer/transom rot, other than that they are great boats. Guys will warn you about the 454/Alpha1 combo. I've heard the stories, but have never had a problem. My outdrive has over 3500 hours on it with no issues. I rebuilt the 454 at 3100 hours.
I have the porta-head too. Blew By You recently added a vacu-flush system to his. If you search around here, you will see pics/posts about his install. He did it himself and did a nice job.
The rot issue scares me to death. I am guessing if it doesnt have rot by now it wont ever have it but it will be thoroughly checked for sure.
Hey all.
I was reading through this thread after seeing the link to it posted in my intro thread and just now realized that I purchased my boat from the member in post 533.
Not sure about the rest of you but I'm slightly amused to know this.
Anyway, Mark sold me a good, clean tub which immediately allowed me to spend the weekend on Lake Winnipesaukee with my two favorite mermaids.
Completely different perspective being at the helm as an owner and actually having to care about what I'm doing. Learned a lot in those few days and look forward to learning a whole lot more!
I'd post a pic but the forum is kicking back an error for file size. Is it possible for cell phone pics to be too hi res?
5200 is the best and the worst thing ever! its almost as bad as antiseaze.
blewbyyou, where did you get your bigger platform and hand holds? really like them!
454 with Alpha 1, 3500 hours no issues.BBY you dont like the SaniPottie? I have installed 2 in my boats and I like them, nice to have the option of pump out or remove for cleaning at no cost! and they are very $$ reasonable. Getaway you have the Alpha on yours and no issues? Damn I just bought everything for mine to change from the waaay too small 5.7 Alpha1 to a 7.4 Bravo1 if I didn't buy all the Bravo transom to out drive parts would have saved me lots. Seemed like everyone said if I didn't do the Bravo that I was wasting money?
