Great Lakes Ice Update.

What is this thing called ice of which you speak?
Some people only use it in their beverages. Some of us have to live with it on the water in which we boat... and use it in our beverages.

It’s like “on the rocks” only bigger.

Lake Michigan off the coast of Grand Haven is free of all ice. The basin at North Shore Marina is ice free. One or two fisherman were on Muskegon Lake and Spring Lake so the 2021 boating season has begun. There were lots of cars parked at marinas as people are inside working on their boats.

About two weeks ago the ice coverage was 2%. With this cold it is expanding fast. We go to Muskegon every year and for this reason I like looking at the Muskegon WebCam a lot. During the winter I always check the web cam and the ice coverage.

Last week we made our campground reservations for Muskegon State Park Lake Michigan. Will be up there for the last few weeks of July

Here is what it looks like today off our cottage (Georgian Bay). Those ice piles extend out about 40 feet from shore and then that is thin ice out to open water. And the second shot is of our marina. Its not on open water and is totally iced in. It was minus 18F (minus 28 celcius). Thats a cold day even for up there. On the drive up it was about minus 25F on the car thermometer a bit away from the lake. When the lake is open it has a "warming effect" and I use that term VERY loosely.

How did Trump cause that? Oh, never mind, I read the article. CNN didn't blame it on Trump (yet)
@Blueone, I wanted to make you smile. I hope it worked.
Who you cheering for in the Olympic hockey?

@Blueone, you know that is the actual Canadian citizenship test right? There is no correct answer for a true Canadian except "I'm cheering for Canada", regardless of whether you are watching or not. You didn't pass. Here is a link to a form for you to fill out:

I had to denounce Canada during my swearing in as a US citizen ….. support where you live

funny story …. Not really. My wife was driving back to Canada and the bridge asked her for her citizenship after she gave them her passport…. She said US citizen. Border guy said pardon me… she said American …. He said you were born in Canada you are a Canadian citizen. He then said he wasn’t allowing her thru until she said she was a Canadian citizen. She said it and he opened the gate…

Yeah, I guess the US does not allow dual citizenship, but Canada does. One of our employees was born in the US to parents where one was British/Canadian and mother was American. They moved to Canada when he was a kid and he had a passport that was Canadian. He had traveled for years back and forth.

Well, on one trip, one of the border guards dug into a few things by asking some questions about why his passport said he was born in the US. So he says something along the lines of "I am a dual citizen, born in the US so still a US citizen, but I also am a Canadian". Well that didn't go over so well. He had some paperwork to do and get sorted out. I don't know all the details, but there was concern he had been technically lying to immigration officials. He got it sorted out eventually, but was told not to cross the border until he did. I think his parents did not actually renounce his US citizenship and should have, but I may have that wrong. I know that he couldn't risk going to the US until he fixed it because the issue was flagged in the "system".

Back when we used to border cross every Saturday to drink in Canada, coming back late one night, I showed the American guard my license. He says “where you born?” I gave him the name of the hospital. It was then I learned they have absolutely no sense of humor.
Oh, some of the stupid cross-border trips we used to do in my younger days. Back then there were two stops in Niagara Falls NY that we would hit on a Saturday night and drive home very late if we decided not to find a seedy motel. I cannot for the life of me remember the names of the bars and it was a LOOONG time ago.

The first was a sports bar that had really authentic "Buffalo" wings. We would go there for a few hours then head to this bar that had unlimited drinks. They give you a wrist band and a plastic cup at the door when you paid the cover, and that was it for the night. I think a few of my brain cells were left down there. I should go back and look for them. We did a few Bills game road trips over the years too. I miss those young and stupid days.

It's nice to see everyone sharing these border crossing stories rather than cussing at each other over the whole Covid BS.

Many years ago while vacationing in north Idaho, while out tooling around the countryside, the fam wanted to go to Canada just to say that they were there once. So, we turned north, headed for the border, when suddenly, I remembered the Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt revolver tucked neatly under the driver's seat. Seeing it in its shining stainless glory makes for a pretty impressive display; not something I'd want any border guard to see. My thought was to park well short of the crossing, take some pictures of the kids and wife with the markers and forest clear-cut defining the border, then u-turn back home. It was going fine until I realized that I'd pulled into a one-way street with no way out, and would have to go into Canada, turn around, then drive back through into the US! "Nothing to declare here, sir!" Major pucker-factor going on that day...
