Lost a good friend on Lake Eire over thw weekend............

We came back to Cedar Point the previous weekend from Vermillion after dark. You absolutely can not see that breakwall at night without radar. Several boats have hit that breakwall over the years, not sure why they don't put a few lights on it. Our prayers are with their families.

Isn't that nice!....Mike.

Sorry about your loss.

Again, sorry for your loss. I have been following this story and the story about the missing Dr. from the Sandusky Yacht Club. I've checked the Sandusky Register for a follow up story but as of today, no story was written. Have they found your friend's body? What's the story with the Dr?

Does the break wall show up on GPS? I travel at night all the time without radar, but I use my GPS. If you are boating at night without a GPS or Radar you are making a huge mistake.

BTW! Sorry for the loss and I hope others will learn from this tragic and unnecessary event.

Its been 9 days now, and Chucks body still has not been found.......... The Coast Guard has not told the family any more info and the O.D.N.R. is keeping a tight lip also.....At this point no one knows any more info....... As soon as i have more info on the subject ill post it here. Rob

AS far as not seeing the breakwall..... I'ts very clear on radar and on the GPS chart link but visually when you approach the break wall from the north, northwest or northeast, the breakwall gets lost in the Cedar Point lights. It's almost like you see over them because the breakwall is so low, especially when the wind is strong and out of the north and the water rises. I have experienced this personally.

That doesn't matter if you are criusing by the GPS. Whenever I cruise at nite with little or no visability, I drive using the GPS and I have the admiral looking for boats/lites. Most GPS are accurate within 10-20 feet which is plenty if you are not traveling at high speeds. In those conditions you should be at idle speed anyway. You have to trust the electronics, and it is always good to have a backup if you are out there at nite.

I agree......as I said "visually" It is amazing how that breakway blends in.

As of today, Chuck's body still has not been found, and the Coast Guard says he may never be found...........

As of today two kids playing on the Ceder Point have come accross the remains of my good friend Chuck Caplin, not more then a 1000 ft. from where the boat hit the wall. At least now the family can lay him to rest.
