Alright Guys/Gals I need some expert advice. My daughter is starting her Phd program at Auburn University this month. A little brag here, she just received a Double (2) Masters degrees (MA,MS) in May. We are very proud of her. She got her mothers intelligence for sure. Anyway, We just found out the house she rented does not have regular internet connections at this time. I know its hard to believe but 4000 homes in Lee County AL do not have cable hook ups. I still find it hard to believe but that's what they are telling us. She has to have fairly good internet connections as she is teaching and doing research. Would also like to stream TV, Netfix etc... What recommendations for plans carriers etc... are there? Any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated. GOD bless. JC

Probably have to go with a mobile device and unlimited data plan with one of their SIM cards for now.
Don’t need anything fancy or complicated. I use my iPad as a hotspot often on the boat. It usually has a slightly better signal than my iPhone. Not sure why, but I’m thinking it must have a bigger internal antenna or something.
My daughter has used my iPad as a hotspot to connect her laptop to so she could work and get on the internet several times with no problems.
Example: I’m inside the cabin on my boat with two bars of service on my iPad while I’m using it to type this response, but my iPhone has no service. If I want to use my iPhone I’d have to go back to my car 25 feet away.
I’m usually able to use my iPad as a hotspot to stream Netflix to one of the smart TV’s here under similar conditions. If I had a full 5 bars here I’d be golden.
Hard to know which carrier has better coverage in the area where her home will be.
They all seem to have similarly priced packages so the one with the best signal is the way to go.
I get great service from AT&T where I live and in most places I go to. Although, not usually at my dock. But others have better luck with Verizon or other carriers.
See if her cell gets a strong signal inside her new home. If so, go with them. If not, ask around to see which carrier is best.

The problem with mobile data now is that moat plans are limited. Check the fine print as most say unlimited but get throttled down after the limit it hit. It still may be enough for basic internet but probably not for streaming TV services.

I would look locally for a WISP provider if this is the case. The wireless connection may provide high speed if you're within their range. Otherwise I would ask locals what they do.

We're quite spoiled in our built out areas and forget that alot of the country is still limited.

JC,

We found that some internet providers in the deep South, and near the coast have bargain plans for part time residents, students etc. We don't need a really fast connection for our use and WOW has a $19.95/month plan that works fine for us. We stream movies at the beach with a faster connection that AT&T has in Tennessee and I'm paying over $100/month for the lite bundle of internet + phone.

It is worth a phone call, anyway.

The throttle back is real with unlimited...my daughter and I can throttle unlimited within 10 days of a billing cycle... It might be beneficial to have two lines one for the tv/phone and another for the computer

Hughes net offers satellite internet service as well so don’t forget about them.

Auburn...That's on her....Just sayin....

Congrats!

To bring an end to this thread I will update you on what we did. After hours of research and talking to other neighbors we went with the T Mobile Magenta Plus plan. Unlimited Data and no throttling till 50GB have been reached. 20GB hotspot. Other standard features etc... We will see how this works out. I want to thank everyone that responded
to this call for help! I really appreciate it. GOD bless. JC

Good luck. I have been happy with my TMO hotspot so far. We use it extensively on the boat for streaming TV and internet to other devices. Funny you mentioned the 50g limit, i got a text about than even though i have a grandfathered unlimited/unlimited plan that should not have triggered that.
