Sea Ray SSS 1993 63 ft

I think there is a storage room in the forward state room apparently there is a hatch there and a ladder down into a storage compartment or so i was told but not sure until i see it.
If it is the 8v92TA's is that a good thing or a bad thing? I noticed on the spec sheet thats its max speed is a bit under the 63 sss .. The 63 sss was 32 knots and this one is 28. My broker is waiting to hear back from the listing broker on the engines, will post about it as soon as i have the model. Are detroit diesels reliable engines? Should i be worried here or feel pretty confident this thing has good motors? Still no word on when we are doing the surveys and trial run. Just waiting on documentation to complete. had to extend my stay an extra week to accomodate all this.

Back to the Detroit issues.............All of the -V-92's are 2 stroke diesels are great engines, however, 2 stroke Detroits are smokey, and dirty by todays standards. They are also tend to leak oil. The engine space is going to stay covered with a fine oily mist from the crankcase blow-by, which is unavoidable on 2 stroke engines. Detroit 2 strokes are also prone to short top end life and many of them need rebuilding at 1500 to 2000 hours. A few years ago, the cost for an inframe rebuild was about $1500/cylinder + labor. The -V92's are no longer produced and parts are getting expensive. You can expect to pay about $7000/cylinder + labor now. Do the math........those numbers get to be nose-bleed amounts. I wouldn't even consider a pair of 2 stroke Detroits without doing a complete engine survey, including bore scoping the cylinder walls. The problem here is that a Detroit survey gets expensive........the last quote I heard was $3500 for 6v92's. By comparison you can survey a pair of Caterpillar Cummins engines for 1/3 of that.

Good luck with the surveys..........

FWEBSTER: Thanks so much for the engine advice!! I do have an engine surveyor coming that will take oil samples etc, i will ask about the additional tests you mentioned before he comes. As long as the engines are good you are ok ...but if they are shot you are in trouble lol
Thanks so much again Frank!

Robert

Have a bunch of new pics mailed to me by my broker including pics of the engines. The forum will not let me post anymore pics, what do i have to do delete some of the old pictures to be able to post the new ones? Just tried to do that but had no option to delete, guess I am at my qouta and cant put anymore up sorry guys.:smt021:smt021

Click on "support this site" at the top of the page and pitch in a little......I think it will give you more space for pics....or follow the directions in this video to host pics offsite and paste them here

you can stick your photo's on "photobucket" just need to create an account and then post the link into the thread. The link will start with "img" rather then http

I am certainly hoping you aren't going down the same road as the other boat. Detroit Diesels..Here in Aud priority is cummins then cats then volvo then Detroits..Mind you the larger boats love the MTU's but that is a different kettle of fish..

I was under the impression that you had been on the 540, did you not take any photos of it whilst you were onboard? Being as you are the buyer and you are close by couldn't you just arrange to go and take some photos? At least you would get the photos that would be of benefit to members here to be of help to you.

Thanks for the info guys on how to post more photos!

Ugh really Ozzie, damn thats kind of discouraging..if this yacht does not work out or the engines are bad i think im going to just give up lol Cant believe it has the worst possible engine of the lot in it, why couldnt it have cats!! You know the saying when its too good to be true, i am hoping it doesnt apply here.. This yacht is spotless compared to all the others i have looked at and is so nice but if it has crap engines!!
Guess we will just have to see what the motor surveyor comes up with, knowing my luck through this whole thing i found a spotless yacht with a lawnmower engine powering it lol
Anyways will keep you all posted!

I have been onboard when it was shown to me and only snapped a few crappy pics with my iphone that I already posted....I will be going there shortly, It is docked behind the owners house he s away and you cant just go on the property...the reason for the delay in everything is we are waiting for his notarized signature. He has already agreed to the sale but is on a ship on vacation so we are waiting for him to get ashore and sign the papers thats whats delaying everything.

OK new pics hope this works....

Holy Smoke! Do you see some of the other boats on that canal?! The neighborhood association is probably insisting the owner get rid of his 'dingy'. :smt001

Seriously though, it's a beautiful boat and it looks like it's in great shape. I hope the engine thing works out for you.

Let me get something straight, you are waiting for notarized documents on the sale of the boat....But you haven't had it surveyed yet.

If you are waiting for the owners signature on a purchase agreement this makes sense. Otherwise you are setting yourself up for disappointment again.

You should have a small deposit in escrow, 5-10% of the purchase price until both engine and full boat surveys are complete. Once you pay for the boat in full or sign a notarized bill of sale the boat is yours either way, no matter what is found on the survey.

I hope you have gone about this the correct way.

I would also like to know what kind of a broker you are dealing with that doesn't know what kind of engines are in a boat he is trying to push you to sell or what is in the "storage locker" that has a ladder going down into it (which is shouldn't by the way).

From the pictures everything looks nice and the upholstery on the back deck is unique. At least from the pics you will need new eisenglass real soon since its getting cloudy, so budget for that as well.

Yes Carver waiting on the signed purchase agreement. Already have a verbal confirmation of the sale just waiting for the written one to come through then will survey and go from there. I chose to keep the original listing broker of the 63 involved in any boat i might buy, this is not his listing hence why he has limited knowledge of the yacht... he is not pushing it on me but helped me find it.
I am doing everything in the correct manner and how things should be done.

No idea what is in the storage locker, have not been back on the boat yet.... hopefully it all comes together then i can answer your question on the storage locker or if its even there. i already have a 10% deposit in escrow for the yacht.

Thanks
Rob

The same listing broker who deceived you on the condition of the 63 SSS?

One of the brokers that was involved in the 63 but there was no foul play or anything bad done on his part. Hes a great guy and the person that found me this amazing 54, i would reccomend him to anyone!
Looks like tommorow morn i am supposed to have the signed PA ...so already have surveyors scheduled for tomorrow...wish me luck! I am hoping next time i post here I am jumping up and down because she is mine or well into the process of being mine, those guys seem to think we may be able to close tomorrow if we push it, if not monday will be closing if she passes survey all that is! Fingers crossed!

Fire! Aim, Ready. Load.

You hope to "close" on a boat before you have a structural survey, mechanical survey, or oil analysis (takes weeks for results)? Your "trusty" broker told you the boat was a freshwater boat, yet it is located in Florida? Seriously!

Early on in this thread my bullcrap detector was pegged. Either you are a troll or the most woefully misinformed and misguided person on the planet. God love you, your enthusiasm is inspiring if you are for real.

Why buy a boat in the United States and have it shipped half-way around the world when you could buy a boat in Austrailia? The costs go way beyond shipping. Everything on the boat that runs on Alternating Current (AC) Power is incompatible with the electrical systems in AU. All of the appliances may work initially, but the 50 Hertz electricity would devastate the electrical motors designed to operate in a 60 hertz environment. That would include Refrigerators, Freezers, Ice Makers, Heat Pumps (AC and Heat), Battery Chargers, Televisions, and we are only getting started. Have you budgeted to replace all of this hardware?

Don't forget to modify the generator as you wouldn't want to destroy all of your brand new 50 Hz appliances with its
60 Hz output.

This is Nuckin Futs
You guys are not going to believe this! What I have been through is pretty amazing, buying a yacht and shipping it to Australia is something else of an experienece. Need to change the name of the thread from 1993 63ft Sea Ray to 1999 54 ft Sea Ray. Long story that I will not say here as I do not want to embaress some people. But lets just say attourneys, almost a lawsuit, broken engines, so many other crazy problems and a night mare of an experience but the 63 is no longer in the picture!

You all said I had some tough lessons to go through and I just went through one of them! But the good news is i got out of it all with only a minor loss and got myself into an immaculate yacht that is spotless, fresh water kept only 500 hours on the engines a real beauty! This thread is turning into an epic saga lol Yes the new boat is not 63 but i actually like the layout of it better. Everything is ultra modern onboard and looks brand new! THe master berth is aft with ensuite shower head, the guest berth is vshaped and up front with ensuite head shower... Also the sofa converts into a queen by the push of a button motorized. You cant even tell the galley is there all hidden under counters and in cabinets, really nice... So great yacht only real difference is the lack of the crews quarters and the salon is not as big. Has hydraulic platform on the back with 14ft tender.... otherwise as i said like new 54 ft sea ray apparently owned by a multimillionaire who spared no expense in upkeep fresh water kept in the great lakes.

There ya have it pretty crazy, got into a 63 sight unseen and learned my lesson! Managed to get out of it with a huge event and just got myself into a beauty of a 54 pictures coming in the next few days. Owner just signed contract so making payment tomorrow and shes mine. I may miss my april shipping date, if so the owners has agreed to let me keep her docked behind his house for free so no biggie there just have to wait until july to have her in Australia which will suck the anticipation will kill me!

What a crazy ordeal all around!
This entire thread is goofy.

I'd be interested to know the pricing on this new 540 you found. That boat might have been in freshwater at some point (when new) but the engine room pictures don't depict that AT ALL or the recently spray painted engines with clear overspray on the hoses (also indicative of a saltwater boat) from touching up rust.

Importing boats from USA..
One reason is we have a trade agreement with you guys so anything built in the USA does not carry a duty of 5%.
If you want to check prices of boats in Australia go to this website www.boatpoint.com.au and check out listings
for Searays..There is a 44db 2nd hand for over $650,000AUD and our dollar is stronger at the moment then yours
$1.04 you could probably by that boat in the US for lets say$300,000 ship $50k GST(TAX) $35K total plus some incidentals $400K save say $200K

Ozzie said it, i am getting this yacht to Australia total for a third of the price I would have to pay for the same thing there.... The pictures were taken 2 days ago here in Florida so thats how there are Palm trees. The surveyors as far as i know can complete their surveys tomorrow and yes they are from a reputable company, so if alls good I will close asap to make a may 20th sailing to Australia. i have talked to a few people about the power issue and apparently it is a relatively easy fix only a few thousand dollars to have a converter installed that outputs the voltage the yacht is wired for. the owner has furnished us with all the miantenance and registration documents and yes it was fresh water kept until recently. Wealthy people do not have the constraints of us regular guys for them to move a boat from one part of the country to another is really not that unbelievable or such a big challenge for them when money is not an issue.
To all the people that think this thread is BS or stupid or whatever negative then please just don't read it or participate in it. I should not have to feel like I have to prove everything I say to you guys, are you guys this suspicious of everyone thats new that posts on here? Why such disbelief and interest in this because it is a large boat, because it has has some twists and turns.. yeah maybe all of this has been a little unconventional but all of it is within the realm of possibility .. so i made some mistakes and was a bit careless in a few ways, my first time doing this and went in blind...I am here for advice from other boaters and to make some friends. maybe many people would not have done things the way I am and yes this all is a calculated risk but worth it to me, if you think that is stupid thats your opinion and i respect that but why rub it in my face? Im sure that is not what this site is about...
So yeah thanks so much to the many super cool people that have given me advice and helped me! the others that dont believe me or think i am doing a dumb thing please if you feel that way keep it to yourselves. I am a bit nervous about this whole thing but very excited at the same time, please do not ruin it for me or put doubt in my mind unless you have something real to tell me that may save me from a big mistake..why rain on someone elses parade? I am not hurting anyone here, once the yacht gets to Australia, hopefully Ozzie and or Paul will come with me for the sailing from New Castle its arrival Port down to Sydney im sure that will calm the skeptics.
