Should you buy a gun or not?

Do any of you guys mod/build your own guns?

I’ve built a few polymer80 guns and one 1911 so far. It’s another fun/expensive hobby.

I’m currently working on making a set of carbon fiber grips for my 1911 but that’s in the very early stages at the moment. Printing a few different designs first. Once I get a design that I like I’ll use it as a mold. That’s the plan at least.

I’m not really a fan of Glocks, so the Polymer 80 guns don’t really do much for me. But, I really went down the rabbit hole with Sig 320 builds, and went through three iterations before ending up with the M17 with DPP red dot and Wilson grip.

My wife and I have home built ARs from Polymer 80 lowers. It was fun to build them out and customize them to our needs, and then take them out and fire them. All of that is illegal now in this miserable state, which is the main reason I did it before the deadline hit.

I only have the p80 Glock copies because I have a carbine that takes Glock mags. The Glock design is odd to say the least. Especially that god awful trigger.

How hard is the polymer AR to build? An AR9 pistol with a brace is high on my want list. (Lower than a 2011 and boat items though)

I’ve also thought about stocking up on items that are about the be made illegal. Pistol braces, a couple p80 frames and a 2011 80% frame.

Here's another .22, winchester mod 52. She's really sexy, I might pose her and take some close ups later.;)

My brother has a friend that had all of the equipment to machine the lower, and we spent an afternoon up there. Between the 2 of us, we knocked out 6 lowers in about 4 hours. The first one took the longest as we figured things out, but there wasn't anything difficult if you have the right equipment.

The friends' shop was setup to do metal lowers not polymer, but it's all the same tools and process. Metal lowers take much longer since you can't take as much material at once as you can with polymer. He was there to oversee us on the first one, but he was VERY careful to describe what needed to be done but have us actually do it, he didn't want any chance to get in trouble that he was making them for us.

Once the work is done on the lower, everything else goes together easily, there are multiple YT vids on building the upper and lower assemblies. We used them and had a finished gun in about an hour.

I'd be more worried that I might need it and not have a gun to save my life or the life of someone with me.

I can handle things in a number of ways. Never had a problem where I wasn’t able to resolve the problems one way or another. However had I used a firearm I’d probably be in jail.

The article's content doesn't make sense, but the underlying agenda does. I love the way they start out "Bald eagles have lifted themselves from the brink of extinction" How'd they do that? "Population increases...have been suppressed by 6.3 percent for males and 4.2 percent for females." Based on what? Did they have a control group to compare with? Posting "data" like this only helps to make guns and gun owners into the bad guys. Who'd want to hinder the poor eagle's attempt at bringing themselves back from the brink of extinction? Why do you people hate animals?
If you've ever been to the Alaskan coast, you'd question that whole "brink of extinction" BS, but then, I'm betting most of the people taken in by that article never step outside of their urban/suburban utopia.

It’s the DDT
...which was banned in 1972 (at least in the U.S.) How many human lives did it save through the decades by virtually wiping out malaria? I think it's funny the line in Wikipedia about DDT that reads "...and it (the book Silent Spring) questioned the logic of broadcasting potentially dangerous chemicals into the environment with little prior investigation of their environmental and health effects." Kinda sounds like the same concern some of us have with a vaccine that is still in its infancy. Crap! I wasn't going to go down that Covid road again.

Yep! And all my dead mentors who were deployed to Vietnam and got cancer from “Agent Orange”. Some were homeless who I met on the street and others were given money by Uncle Sam but their story was the same.

BTW DDT is still used in very controlled ways because it kills the F out of mosquitoes. If there is a malaria hot spot they still spray it. They just don’t talk about it.

Agent Orange; what a nasty thing. I can't say we should have known better, because we knew better! What a farce, and a hell of a thing to expose our own people to. Any people, for that matter...

So many people I care about died.

I think the article on lead makes sense, but we will never know to what extent. I see more eagles in western NY now than I ever have, perhaps because the population has increased they are able to do more autopsies and testing and are seeing this. The NY DEC sends out emails and news letters to sportsmen and they are starting to talk a lot about this. I received a questionnaire in November (right in the middle of deer season) asking about my ammo preferences and would I be opposed to using non lead projectiles considering a bunch of variables like availability, comparable cost to lead etc.
They also published an article that compares lead and non lead harvested deer to show all the lead fragments from the lead bullets and specifically called out one manufacturers bullet type as being one of the worst examples, and of course that has been my go to bullet for my deer loads for decades because they kill quicker because of all of the secondary wound channels and are inherently very accurate. So I suppose NY will be joining other states in banning lead rifle bullets, just like they banned lead shot for waterfowl hunting years ago.
I’m not totally opposed to it, but i hope it would be phased in to let bullet manufacturers ramp up. Availability of lead bullets is bad enough.
