Love my 460 DA but during these dog days of summer it is difficult to have guests and lounge around the cockpit as the sun cooks everyone. I recently was reading about SureShade and was wondering if anyone has installed this on their 460DA? If you have it, did you do the manual or the electric? Can you run at higher than idle speeds with it extended? Any other pros or cons? Any other considerations?

No replies on this? I’m in the process of buying a 460 with a hardtop. Love to see how bad one of these would look mounted on top. The shade in the back would be amazing, but I think it would kill the lines on the boat...

I’m not sure it would work honestly. The sure shade would have to be mounted below the hardtop and it would look pretty out of place. I’ve seen them installed on a 60 and it’s nice but the 460 really just isn’t big enough in my opinion. Now I’d love to see one if you go and do it!

SureShade is a factory option on Sabre and Back Cove. Reports from SureShade owners on Sabre & BC owners groups have not been encouraging. Motors are reported as slow and frequent jambs in the retractable Mechanism seem to be the major points.

Why not go with a side less Camper back top?

Sureshade says their rear mounted shades can be open when the boat is running up to 50 mph. The electric ones require dealer installation. Manual ones can be self installed. Electric ones use 3 phase power if I recall right. Figure about $10k for an electric one installed. Half for manual

Take a look at the MTX version. It’s a manual pull out. I wanted one but it would not fit on my boat as it has a max width of 78”.

Here’s a gallery of installs on Sea Rays. Scroll to the bottom for some after market photos. https://www.sureshade.com/sea-ray-sport-yachts/

Just a note about the electric ones. Back Cove and Sabre owners have reported some problems. Corrosion of non-potted electrics, things getting stuck. I was actively trying to buy an electric versionand Sureshade was not very responsive. My boat dealer stopped doing aftermarket installs because of quality issues.

Given the cost, complexity, and reported reliability issues, you might want to consider 2 other options. 1) a side less camper back as Henry suggested. Or 2) a shade supported by poles mounted in rod holders. I think a couple boaters here have done this recently.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I’d be fine with a manual pullout. Don’t like the look of the two stainless bars mounted in the top in those photos, however.

Don’t want to do a camper back top as it needs to be able to up or down depending on who is sitting back there. Wife doesn’t like sun, the rest of the family does.

I’ve seen the posts on here with the rod holder canopies. I’ll have to explore that a little further I suppose. Anyone have pictures of a 460 hardtop done that way?

There is a company that does an aftermarket shade. Looked pretty nice. I can't remember their name. Going to search around, hopefully I'll find it.

I just had this made. I'm having 2 more snaps put in the flap to prevent the droop. Works great.

Gunner you are welcome to come down to Ft Lauderdale and check out my set up if you would like some weekend. I am just off the 95 and Davie Blvd. I am usually in town Friday - Sunday if you want to take a look.

Here's what my buds had done. I'm doing the same thing on the 370, except no glass. Solid cover when it's closed up, and completely off when we are boating. They on the other hand, never open that up, and keep the cockpit air conditioned. 20171204_135342.jpg 20180227_143528.jpg I don't get enough cold weather here to need a sun room. I just need to stay out of the Dermatologist Office. These were taken the day it was installed. Has since tightened up nicely, no wrinkles.

I used Ttop boat covers. Very happy with the shade. The suction cups are heavy duty and I can put it up in just a few minutes. You can also run with it up. Cost was about $1100.
