The common sense answer is that masks reduce, but don't eliminate, the risk of transmission. If you look at the recent literature, some of which is posted on this thread and others, there are varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the mask type from N95s at the top down to bandannas, which aren't very effective. Also, if a symptomatic infected individual is hacking lung, they will likely blow droplets and aerosol out the sides of the mask, creating more risk of transmission. Further, irrespective of masking, an infected individual is likely to spread a trail of fomites that others may pick up through touch. So, if one is known to be infected, quarantine is the safest course.

Since July the CDC has said masks work.

Exactly right, you have excellent intuition. In the U.S., inter-seasonal (summer) flu was at historic lows this year. In the Southern Hemisphere, which has just gone through its winter flu season, in countries with strong masking and social distancing mandates as well as robust vaccination programs, flu cases have declined by a factor of ten this year.

If people wore masks like they have done in Asia for decades when they felt sick or had cold symptoms out in public it would dramatically cut down respiratory illnesses.

Can you read? Did I say 24/7? I said people who are sick and go out in public. Clearly you failed to comprehend that simple statement. Just as can’t understand basic hygiene. You remember I’m sure, “Cover you mouth when you cough”?

Never said you said or implied 24/7. The current mask mandates that are continually extended are 24/7 - not just if your sick. That is what I'm talking about.

That said, look at the mask mandates! How are they not 24/7. In Illinois, the latest mandate has you wearing a mask in your car as you go through a Drive Thru!

Look at this article for NYC - how is this not 24/7??
