So this is just a bit of a rant. I took my F-150 and BMW to the local auto shop yesterday to have oil changes done. On the boat I do all of my own work, but oil change(s) on my vehicles I leave to the local shop, usually. Anyway, I drop them both off and ask for Mobil one and I'll be back at the end of the day.

So now I go to pay for the oil changes and see the bill. Ready for this - $180 for the BMW and $170 for the truck. OMFG! You have got to be kidding me! They charged me $19.23/qt for Mobile one but only charged .175 of an hour or $17.50 in labor to change the oil. The local NAPA, where they get there parts from, is $7/gt on sale right now normally $11/gt. I mean how can they charge that with a straight face!

I am so disgusted with the state of affairs we are in I can't even say. I know this is petty and there is a lot more to be worried about then this, but J.H.Chr*** ...

It is ridiculous....I do the boat and my truck myself. Truck holds 8 qts Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 filter from Sam's/Amazon total $55.....and I know it is done right. Had a friend that took his toyota to Jiffy Lube...filled the engine with ATF. On my truck oil pan and boat transmissions, removed the drain plugs and installed the EZ Oil Drain Valves. Takes longer to pour in the oil than to drain.....and no mess.....

Yep, I hear you, I do the boat because I have the vacuum pump so I don’t have to lay down, I used to work for AutoZone as a driver, I still get the 20% employee discount so for the Lincoln I buy 6qts of the Motorcraft blend and filter. I work a deal with the local Valvoline quick change guys and gals, they charge me 35.00 and use my oil. I save 20.00 over their blend oil change. I usually tip 10.00 if they are courteous and friendly, plus they have the under car/hood cameras so I can see what’s going on and I get the oil and filter I want. I still do the Jag myself but since I might drive it 10 miles a week it’s more of a time thing than miles.

The problem is a lot of places (NAPA, A-Zone, Advance) are selling many if not all things to the public at what they call their "DYI price" which most times is less than what they sell it to repair shops for.

This is a perfect example and a big problem in the industry. My cost (I run an auto repair shop) for a quart of mobile1 is $12.99 with the suggested list price of $23.53.

Yeah I get a discount at NAPA and my price is 11.99/qt. I am spoiled I guess, last time I try and relax on the weekend ...

BTW you posted your Pro links.

I do my own oil changes on boat and cars for this very reason. I will say, however, on my beemer (which has the N63TU engine--'ho v' design), I use only Pentosin 5w/40, and I always buy an extra 5l container of it due to the amount of oil this engine tends to burn. So for the beemer change, I'm in it for $179 bucks and my labor (only about half of the third 5l container is used over the subsequent months). As to the 2017 Expedition, I was using Mobile 1, but am trying the Kirkland synthetic. We shall see...

I figured you for a guy to do your own. I did all 3, last weekend. Mobil 1 synthetic in my SUV and GFs car. Purchased oil and filters from Walmart online. Liqui MOLY for the BMW, stills gets amazing oil analysis reports from Blackstone. I don't do it because I love it; I do it because I know all the old oil came out and I know the right new oil, and filter, went back in. Plus it's more convenient than dropping off and picking up 3 cars. Though I do have a local service shop 3 blocks from me I can walk to; I have thought about taking the cars to them for the labor only.

And, once again, I forget to remove the drain plug in the drain pan (Big red circle cap in pic below) and you guessed it, oil all over the garage floor. The white oil absorbent pads from the boat came in handy, again.

For me it comes down to time. I did my Escalade in 20 mins between meetings yesterday. $40 for oil/filter/plug but by the time I drive to a dealer, sit there, then drive home I've lost $500 in income

One nice thing about an SUV: if you're not a big bastard you can get in/out on a creeper without even needing a jack
