Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Slowly coming to know the ins and outs of my 3116s. Just interested in the old pre walker air filter breather etc system I have. From what I know/see the blow by goes thru the breathers and loops back into the system via the air filters. I’m just surprised that that system is so open to the air, ie the last part prior to the air filter is just an exhaust like pipe which spews it’s gases through open air into the filter. Just seems a bit nuts to me but maybe someone at cat figured that out about 1998 which is why the walker system was introduced. Just intrigued ?

You can hear it better further away from the boat, in this case standing at the dock, try this video. The water flow looks odd to me as well, like it's surging.

If you rev that engine up are you seeing any bubbles come from under the boat? I almost wonder if something is obstructing or clogging your underwater exhaust. I am around a lot of these boats in my line of work, the water flow and loudness is a little abnormal.

That all looks relatively normal to me, no? The slight whine sounds like turbo whistle to me.

I started running boost and egt sensors. I’m guessing I have the probe in the wrong spot. I’m getting readings in the 50’s in idle at the dock

That is the correct mounting position. I want to say a warmed up 3126 at idle, no load is in the 300’s *F

Is this all Maretron equipment? If so, possibly you have the EGT sensors wired to the wrong inputs. You can only use terminals 1-4 on the TMP-100 for EGT sensors, and sometimes it’s hard to tell. Check that.

Also, these leads are polarity sensitive, so also check that. Yellow is +, Red - . Yellow should go to pins T0 and T2, the red, T1 and T3

One other note on the Boost pressure. I came across a specification from CAT that dictates the position of the boost gauge. I doubt it has much effect IRL, but it does exist. I’ll see if I can find it.

For the record, mine is installed in the port towards the front of the boat, and no idea if it’s the correct port lol.

my mechanical EGT gauge doesn't even read until the boat is in gear and at something like 800-900RPM. I think the gauge starts at 350

my boost sensor is in the middle hole because I stripped the first one :)

I also stripped the Hex trying to get the plug out. They are in pretty tight. I used a punch and hammer to get the plug loose. Had to dig the punch into the face of the plug.

I haven't reved that engine up yet. I bumped it to 1000 rpms and the whine/whistle continued. I did not think about the underwater exhaust, good point. I'll checked next time I am on the boat.

I really only checked the temp at idle didn't go for a long run. I put my hand on the exhaust tube and it was cold. The water under the boat is probably in the 50’s

This location is before the shower head so no water in the exhaust gas stream yet. You should be registering a true EGT temp.

how long of a probe? Either way, it’s the right setup and I’m not surprised it’s not registering at idle. The pyro ranges can only be so wide without sacrificing accuracy so a boat ride is in order for you to verify.

Going to pull my heat exchangers as both zincs broke in the bonnet. Haven't done it in ages as fresh water flushing them after every run, rydlime prior to winterizing and bore scoping them confirms they are clean as a whistle. That said, did CAT change from two O-rings per side to an O-Ring/gasket combo? My CAT parts guy was confused as SIS shows two different schematics. One with O-Rings only and one with O-Ring/gaskets.. I've always gotten/used two O-Rings per side but the parts guy is telling me I need the O-Ring/Gaskets..

Also, no update on the knock issue. Still waiting for Foley CAT to get back to me to schedule an appointment. They're booked full for at least the next two weeks...Sigh

if you happen to need injectors just a heads up 10R8996 are apparently way back ordered…not sure if that’s the PN you need. I was able to get 5 but the 6th is estimated 68 days out

Still playing the waiting game for them to even come down and diagnose the problem. Foley CAT covers the entire Jersey Shore and spring is their busy season..

Looks like they are remans. Are new N/A or much more $?

both! I would’ve bought new if they were available, even for the 6th but none available across the entire cat dealer network. They’re about 2x the cost I think
