2023 Springtime Shine thread

that was the joke..... I guess you could use a wrist strap with a short lead
That's actually a pretty good idea. Likely paid for my CSR subscription a few times over with just that!

I’ve always been Leery about 3rd party batteries, I wonder about quality control and fire hazard

I generally agree with you, but for $60 vs $200 or 1/3 the price, I thought I'd give them a shot. These have a 4.9 review (for whatever that is worth).

The Dewalt name brand are just so pricey. If I was making my living on them day to day, I'd buck up, but for a tool Ill use 2-3 days a year, I think they will work just fine. Or I'll return them!

Does anyone who does not have bottom paint clean and polish below the waterline?

I do once a year, not as much to shine as to get the marks off from the dry storage forklift. The lift operators get kinda nervous when they see someone polishing and waxing the bottom of their boat.

Batteries Plus, makes them while you wait. I’ve had them rebuild old packs for a 1/3 of cost of new.

Me too….. when I was doing heavy duty home renovations I had six being recharged at any given time….. it didn’t take me long to replace the knock offs….. what I have now is 4 dewalts that are 7 years old still going strong…. Pick your poison.

+1 on DeWalt. My OLD 12V batteries are about 10 years old. Still going. My newer 20V batteries are 4 years old IIRC and still as strong as the day they were new.

You guys are right. On strait up battery performance, the Dewalt brand name outperforms. However, on a $/W*hr basis the 3rd party can give the brand name a run for the money. In other words, I'll need to buy more cheaper ones to get the same run time.

It’s not only run hours…. As important is longevity…. I have never been wronged by Dewalt

I’ll tell you a real life story….. their contractor table saw you see in big box stores …when they were building prototypes for that saw they contracted my company to make a cast iron version of the table top. The way it was cast is was fairly light weight….. to drive cost out of grinding the table surface ….I worked with Kennametal and makino to come up with a CNC grinding process…… it worked perfect….. almost a glass finish……we made quite a few protos and Dewalt built the saws….. when ever Dewalt protos a tool….. they give it to real contractors…they give their feedback and that is extremely important to the direction Dewalt goes. The contractors didn’t like the pattern left on the surface…..so a visual issue ..then they said the surface was too smooth and offered no resistance when pushing wood sheet across the surface…… I lost the contract and that’s why you see an aluminum table surface in Home Depot today…… at the end of the day I never bought another tool other than a Dewalt……. The design, research, cost and testing with anything they make is extreme.

I'm gonna try these and report back. I could buy 2 more and still be about 1/2 the brand name. At least it made the initial purchase a little more reasonable. If I hit $500, the wife starts asking questions!

On a $/watt*Hr basis, seems like the Waitley are not a bad buy for a DIY'er. If I'm on a job and time is money, I think Dewalt are worth the $$. For me, if the batteries die, I'm going to quit and have a beer!

Got the swim platform non-skid done yesterday. It's the first time I've ever polished a swim platform. @Stee6043 it's nice as nice as yours, but nice enough.

Looks awesome! Yet another bonus of those fancy covered slips - you guys can polish and wax just about any time you want! Though I have been known to drop pads, towels, all manner of stuff over the side of my boat in the process of cleaning. I'd have to have a safety net if I was doing it in the water :)

The 3rd party batteries I bought seem OK, get about 15 minutes of buff time out of each one, but even the biggest badest, fastest charger DeWalt won't have the spare ready to go when I run down the second, so I end up with dead time.

So looking to add some more batteries. I thought I'd try a set of DeWalt brand name, but seems there are at least 3 or 4 battery types, so trying to decide witch one is the "best" for the polishing duties.

In the Dewalt lineup, they have a 6 Ah XR, Flex Volt and now the Power Stack. I dont plan on any 60V tools, so I think I can eliminate the Flex Volt, but which between the XR line and Power Stack is better for this job? Also have 8,9 and 10 Ah in the XR line, which might be better for a buffer. So far the Power Stack's largest battery is 5Ah.

Anybody buy some new Dewalt batteries lately and have any intel before I lay down some more $$$?

15 minutes? I'd lose my mind.

I have 5Ah Dewalt XR Lithium Ion batteries. I get about an hour, maybe 1.5 hours polishing out of each battery. Don't forget that as you increase the Ah rating they will get heavier. I find the 5Ah to perfectly balance the polisher. Maybe the 6 would too but man...a 10? That thing probably weighs quite a lot?

60-90 minutes also seems like good separation on beer refills, so there's that too. For these reasons, I highly recommend 5Ah XR's :)

Just bought 2 5 Ah's I'll get a head to head with the cheapies.

I re-corded my cheap as$ HF polisher for $9. I'll get another season out of it, but a Dewalt corded is on the list.
