Boat Hatch Covers - These look awesome! Has anyone tried these?

Looks like all the pictures / installs are on sailboats or slower powerboats. Wondering if they would flap around and/or rip off if you had it on while running up on plane. That said I guess you could take them off before getting under way and only use them while on anchor or pierside etc.

Some of those sailboats they have, including the videos.. they seem to be going pretty quick, at least as fast as our cruisers. I cruise around 22-25 knots on a regular basis.

No experience with that, but...

There used to be an option for a "hatch cover". It's simply a Sunbrella material that had (4) corner pockets on it and it slipped over the hatch. You may still be able to get it - I would guess around $50. Probably only cost about that much to have one made, as well. Another option is what the newer boats have - it mounts to the underside of the deck (inside) and contains both a screen and a shade - they just "roll up" inside the casing.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that, IIRC, one of the manufacturer's of the screen/shade combo thing is OceanAir. I think Lewmar is the other (or at least these used to be the manufacturer's).

+1 I really like the screen so bugs don't get in.

Yes, I've done a lot of research to find the slip on covers that came as an option with the Sea Ray. They don't make them anymore, I've searched high and low for these things and they are very rare. I'd love to have it inside instead of outside.. do you have a link for those? and the OceanAir .. those things are PRICEY! I think anywhere from $150+ for each one! I think this is their site: http://www.oceanair.co.uk/

Where can I get these? I'd love to do it from the inside instead of up top!

+2 I thought this was really neat when my friend showed it to me on his boat. Just another one of those things that Sea Ray does that makes these boats so nice.

Have one on my boat, Works great and does not look too hard to make if not availlable. Matches all the canvas.

Well, if you're looking for a cheapie way to do it, cut a piece of material and lay it on top of the screen. Heck, you could use an old, stained bed sheet that you were just going to throw out, anyways.

Did you try a local upholsterer? I'd be surprised if they charged more than $50 for a slip-on cover.

Here - I found this in about 20 seconds of googling (the auction ended, but I'm sure there's more): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sunbrella-C...958648&pt=Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&vxp=mtr

Dennis,

My boat came with those hatch covers that you speak of. I thought that I needed to install snaps on them or something to secure them. I don't think there is enough space for me to slip the corners on. I will check them out again in the spring. Do they have to be removed when you're under power?

Todd, the only ones I've ever seen are the kind that slip on. I wouldn't doubt if there were snap-on ones as well, though. For the slip-ons, they're quite tight. It usually takes a bit of muscle to get the last corner on. But, yes, they can stay on while underway - even towing.

I've got the snap on type.

Had mine made when I did new canvas 5 years ago. Same material as the canvas, a snap is in each corner and the male snap is screwed in each corner of the hatches. So easy to get on and off.

I think I still have the ones from when the canvas was redone if anyone wants them, they are Sunbrella Mediterrainen Blue, they have the snaps installed, fit the 2 large hatches and 2 small hatches on my 370.

I got my Sunbrella covers thru Great Lake and I thinkI paid around $25.00. Measure the hatch and give them a call.

Just ready the flyer on the original poster's link. It says they cannot be used when underway. I have the sunbrella slip-ons that Dennis refers to. Work well and don't come off. Only drawback is that you have to be careful to not get the fabic caught between the deck and the seal on the hatch, or you get a potential leak. Currently, mine are black, but I think I might go with a lighter color. I think a little more light inside would be better.

Dude, there sail boats! They do not cruise at 22kts! And they say you can't use them underway... Just order the covers from Great Lakes, you will get the whole set for under $100 deliverd! I have a set on mine and have not taken them off in 4 years, including all the last few major storms.
