Maintenance is harder when you’re old..
Engines
Twin Mercruiser 340 inboards
Had another maintenance “ learning experience “ today.
boat is equipped with a Fram primary fuel filter and Secondary Spin on type.
The Fram is corroded and does not want to spin off.
so considering putting in a Racor cartridge replacement type filter for Primary.
Any other type that is decent?
Would having two of the Sierra spin off types, be advisable?
Advice/ comments please. TIA

I've got two spin-off filters per side on my Merc's. I believe the setup to be 100% factory. Works like a charm...

No, I don't see a problem with two spin-on types. The drainable style (Racor, etc) is nice, though. It gives you an easy way to check fuel quality.

If you use two, inline spin-on filters... be sure to keep extra onboard. If the first one clogs, that engine is dead. You could build in a bypass, too. And, truthfully, you could just run with one filter for each engine.

There's an old saying... Friends don't let friends use Fram :)

I think the new saying is, “Fram doesn’t let Friends use Fram”
I sent a message to Fram. Their reply “ We have no info on this historical product”

off to research more on fuel filters…..

If that has a WIX in it like Patrick mentioned, WIX is good quality.

The Fram is not a spin off
Remove the bolt in the bottom
Should be a WIX 33110 cartridge

Thanks!! That is more info, than Fram provided. I thought the bolt was just a drain plug. I removed it, but nothing else loosened up. The housings are pretty corroded.

So remove the bolt, then what? Does the housing just jiggle down & off?

I do have 2 replacement cartridges. Saw the Wix brand after I hunted high & low, before finding the overpriced Frams.

Fran used to be the orange can of death as far as oil filters go but now I hear the new fram titanium is one of the best oil filters if not the best oil filter you can buy

Yes gaskets stick
New cartridges should come with new rubber

Problem solved!
My younger and more nimble Buddy crawled in there today.
with only 4” of head room, he saw, where I could not, a Top bolt hidden by the mounting bracket .
top bolt mount and top bolt retainer.
bottom bolt for drain.

with spring loading, a new cartridge and 3 gaskets, it was a little tricky to reassemble. Patience and core/leg muscles were tested. I did the harder one and my buddy did the easier one.
Have to get one more cartridge for the generator and that will be the easiest one.
thanks for being helpful! I received more useful info here, than anywhere else.

now I have to start a thread about my oil change
