I'm posting this here as there may be people that want to add there own version of this trip... There will be a duplicate on my blog as well.
For the 2008 Labor Day, we met up with a few other Sea Ray owners at Port Kinsale resort on the lower Potomac River. The town, or should I say Post Office, is located on the northern neck area of Virginia and is very rural. Boats in attendance, and their respective families and friends, were:
Truly Blessed II from Woodbridge, VA (CSR name skip)
Full Circle from Solomons Island, MD (CSR name cjmartin)
Glory Daze from Baltimore, MD (CSR name standers)
Four Suns from Williamsburg, VA (CSR name… foursuns)
So… I have to take Four Suns up to Kinsale with one of my kids and one of his friends and my wife is going to drive up with her Honda and meet us there on Saturday. She teaches school and school opens here on Tuesday (i.e. today) and there is no way she can get weathered in. Of course by her driving, that pretty much guarantees the weather will be picture perfect.
I left Saturday morning about 10:00 am with my son Chris and his friend Calvin and sure enough, the weather was great. We got into Port Kinsale about 1:30 pm and grabbed the t-head on the dock and the other boats and families were already there.
I got a call from Susie and she had a flat tire that she needed to get fixed and they couldn’t fix it until 5:00 pm. I won’t mention that I was supposed to get it fixed earlier in the week and didn’t. The really bad thing about this? My camera is in the front seat of her car. Also, she had run around all day picking up stuff like a grill for the cookout on Sunday (Kinsale did not have outdoor grills) and various other things.
Oh yeah.. I should mention my oldest son did not come because he is back in school up by Charlottesville and my second oldest son was staying home to watch the dogs and to have a party in our house as soon as we left.
Saturday at the docks was fun.. I was pretty upset I didn’t have my camera as right after I docked, this redneck guy is leaving the marina on his jet ski with a cigarette in his mouth and a Chihuahua dog sitting in his lap.. you just had to see it. I’m pretty sure he had a Budweiser between his legs as well.
We all went up (sans Susie and Timmy) and had dinner at the restaurant at the marina. Great seafood buffet! This was one of the best seafood buffets I’ve seen on the bay. The crab legs were perfect.
Susie didn’t get in until about 9pm that night. Apparently, Google maps doesn’t know the area that well and after she went down a dirt road between 2 corn fields, she figured out she was lost. Note to self: don’t call wife who is lost in rural Virginia and tell her how good the seafood buffet is.
She arrived with our youngest son Timmy safely and that’s all that matters… and my camera arrived… So I could get pictures of the intellectually stimulating talk on the dock that night:
The next morning, Sunday, the weather is supposed to be mostly sunny and windy. It was mostly cloudy and not a speck of wind:
It did clear up later in the day but there wasn’t any wind to speak of.
The morning light did reveal some other things… Skip has nine people… yes NINE PEOPLE staying on his 42 foot boat.
By 7:30 am, they are stocking beer in the cooler:
I guess with NINE PEOPLE on a boat, you need beer by 8:00 am. I would.
The whole dock is overloaded with stuff that had been unloaded from the bow of the boat:
and
Susie and I and our crew of 3 kids headed over to the restaurant for breakfast. They had a buffet and it did not disappoint. Got back to our boat and it had been vandalized:
a view from the back:
Now the way my boat is parked, this sign is there for the whole river to see:
And as people were leaving and entering the marina, they didn’t know what to think of this:
The one thing about practical jokes is you are not supposed to look so damn guilty when asked if you did it:
Oh yeah… and Skip brings along his ole’ BULLY friend who makes sure I can’t retaliate:
Our original plans for Sunday were to head over to a local farm that supposedly has a goat high wire act and then cook out later in the evening. We never made it to the farm though. Everyone seemed to just want to hang out at the marina and do various activities. Some of the younger kids were into hunting for clams and crabs:
and
and Andy here wanted to go sell his catch to the restaurant for 25 cents per clam.. not sure if he made the sale or not.
Some people went to the pool… Some people played board games on the boats:
and
Some people tried to do work inside the boat and told me they were going to shove my camera up my ass:
Some people hung out and drank beer and margaritas:
and watched the very intoxicated people on the end of the dock playing air guitar and singing AC/DC songs at the top of their lungs:
The highlight for Sunday was supposed to be a great all-American cookout. I had marinated some baby back ribs in maple syrup and brown sugar and Susie brought those up in the car along with a grill. She was supposed to get a big Weber kettle grill but she couldn’t find one so she got this cheap ass grill from Wal-Mart. Now I am really picky about the BBQ… I like to use real wood charcoal (not the brick-ette crap) and so we now have this $19 grill made in China that is out gassing lead paint fumes and smells really bad. Oh well..
We set up shop to grill up in the boat yard… next to some boat stands and an old crappy looking Sea Ray that has it’s outdrives (what’s left of them) taken apart and tomato cans shoved in the holes so water won’t get inside.
So we start the fire… CJ brings down some chicken… put on a few ribs… and the fire goes out…
Here’s Stan trying to blow on the coals:
Here’s Stan trying to fan the coals with his hat:
Here’s Stan trying to fan the fire with two pieces of scrap wood:
Here’s Stan finishing off the chicken:
Here’s Skip leaving to go look at the old Sea Ray as dinner cooks on the grill:
Susie told me last night that Michelle (CJ’s wife) asked “Didn’t we have some chicken somewhere?”
Dinner actually turned out pretty good… I think… We all hung out at the docks after dinner and gabbed.. oh… and here’s a shot of one child who had a foot injury:
We even got Stan to eat some boiled peanuts:
The next morning, Full Circle and Glory Daze headed out and those of us remaining walked up to get some breakfast. We had to first stop and look and the grill crime scene from the night before:
And put that cheap ass grill in its place:
Susie has been banned from the grill selection committee.
We had a nice breakfast:
and
The kids ended up swimming in the pool a little and we booked out. The weather was perfect out on the water for the 3 hour run home:
leaving the Potomac:
Rounding Smith Point:
A guy blowing by me burning lots-o-fuel:
Got home safe and had a great time!
