My boat has too much power

i do not have a capacity plate on my 2001 so i doubt you have one on your 2002....all i have is the 'Yacht Certified' plate under the steering wheel....you can see it in this pic...
Even my little 280DA has a Yacht certified plate below the throttles. AFAIK there is no passenger limitation on this boat. The plate you showed was an international plate, so maybe it is different outside the USA. Now my 175 could seat a maximum of 8... :)

not good .

this ce certification has to be read that the boat is certified to carry maximum 12 persons or a total load of 1360 kg ( passangers + baggage ) whatever occours first.

so you ( in legal terms) cannot carry 20 kids even when you are pretty safe regarding the weight.

the passenger limitations take mainly into account seating opportunities available in the cockpit / cabin for a safe ride without the danger for people to tumble or fell overboard being crowded anywhere when underway and the weight limitation takes mainly into account sufficient boyancy , handling and stability characteristics for a given sea state ( "b" in this case )

sure... as long nothing happens whe just enjoy the day on the water

best regards

This thread went way of track and is a zombie thread but .... now I am interested, I have never exceeded a capacity plate to my knowledge - many many years ago I was taught with the UK volunteer coastguard that width * length / 15 is the calculation when in doubt or unplated (which seems crazy now).

Is there a Federal law that sets this as being a legal matter?

so for my boat:

length = 34'
width = 11.5'

L x W /15 = 26 passengers

so i think 'Do Over' was well within the limits with 13 people on board since we have the same boat....

Yes - as i say it seems crazy to me now, but that was the boarding inspection guideline I was given if unplated or when there is no "people on board" data on the plate and they are within carrying weight.

Actually it seems like numerous USA and Canada boater ed sites use the same formala - https://www.boat-ed.com/pennsylvani...acity-and-the-Capacity-Plate/101039_101039022

I am now still curious if there are federal laws, or maybe at the provincial or state level - that set out the legal situation.

We are all responsible mariners - and I know we would always err on the side of caution and safety of our passengers and vessel is always the first priority - so I would not want to degrade the thread to that type of dialogue - but the learner in me is now generally interested to know from the community what the legal situation is in their view.

maybe a letter to the Coast Guard could clarify this.....

The feds don't set stds for capacity of pleasure boats over 20', check with your states, they may. In any case boat loading is not just by numbers, boating conditions need to be considered. I'd think those of us with the CE stickers would at least be expected to use that 'recommendation' as guidance by the authorities.
